Burke Mountain Academy Skiers go to UNH for Physical Testing

FasterSkierSeptember 25, 2008

On Wednesday the 24th of September five skiers from Burke Mountain Academy’s Nordic Team took advantage of the chance to do lactate profiles and VO2 Max testing under the guidance of UNH Asst. Professor Dain Laroche. Dr. Laroche is a graduate of UNH who went on to finish his doctorate work at the University of Utah. His familiarity with skiers and with ski coaching makes his help particularly valuable. The controlled but informal atmosphere of the testing lab both put people at ease about the testing and provided a chance for consistent conditions. We came away with good information for both broad guides for newer athletes, and some fine tuning for those with more training time under their belts.

The chance for the testing came at a perfect time as BMA is on a “camp break” for three weeks. Alpine skiers packed up gear and teachers and are on snow in Chile, and the Nordic team has taken this past week for the testing and some specific work here on campus. People now head home for a week of easy training and college visits then come together again in Keene, NY for a hard ten day camp that will include some workouts with US team skiers and former BMA coach Matt Whitcomb. Back to regular classes for another academic block after that.

Thanks to Dain Laroche and his graduate students at UNH and to Cory Schwartz for taking the time to give our skiers the quick tour of skiing at UNH.
