Calgary to Minnesota – After a fourty-five minute delay for de-icing we were finally off, leaving the cold (-31 Celsius) temperatures of Canmore behind and on our way first to Phoenix and then finally to Minneapolis. It was odd landing in Phoenix, seeing brown and green landscapes and feeling 60+ degrees after skiing for two and a half weeks. As we waited at our gate the three gates to our right read Oahu, Kona, and Maui, Hawaii, long story short we’re here in Minnesota now.br /br /a href=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_mrH2aLzeZss/SyADolycxtI/AAAAAAAAAio/Y7wNv-a8x9A/s1600-h/Skiing+amongst+snow+piles.JPG”img style=”cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;” src=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_mrH2aLzeZss/SyADolycxtI/AAAAAAAAAio/Y7wNv-a8x9A/s200/Skiing+amongst+snow+piles.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413330747972699858″ //abr /Lot’s of snow being made here!br /br /The cold temperatures followed us to Grand Rapids. Highs in the single digits and windchills reaching far below zero (-19F). Training is tough in these conditions, but the athletes are doing well to get the work in. For the organizing committee, the cold temperatures are a blessing as they can now make a ton of snow. They’re doing a great job in a very short amount of time. 1km awaited our arrival yesterday and today there was nearly 2km, with 2.5km expected by day’s end. The work here is like most Nordic venues where volunteers make things happen. Two piston bullies, one front end loader, a few snow guns, and a lot of volunteer hours! br /br /a href=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_mrH2aLzeZss/SyAFkJMSAhI/AAAAAAAAAiw/Tfgjpm3-kA4/s1600-h/Piston+Bully.JPG”img style=”cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;” src=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_mrH2aLzeZss/SyAFkJMSAhI/AAAAAAAAAiw/Tfgjpm3-kA4/s200/Piston+Bully.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413332870600196626″ //abr /Francis Pelkey: Goomer for the local snowmobile club. 83 years old and over 50 years of experience!br /br /a href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_mrH2aLzeZss/SyADn0rMTJI/AAAAAAAAAig/lZEERhPaTfY/s1600-h/Moving+snow.JPG”img style=”cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;” src=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_mrH2aLzeZss/SyADn0rMTJI/AAAAAAAAAig/lZEERhPaTfY/s200/Moving+snow.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413330734788922514″ //abr /Early mornings, late nights = long days and great skiing.
