You probably forgot about it, but way back in the fall we held the first Madshus/FasterSkier Vintage Photo Contest. We decided to make the contest “vintage” as well as the photos, by waiting far too long to announce the winners. Well, good things come to those who wait!
Thanks to Madhus for sponsoring this contest!
All photos entered had to be from 1994 or earlier. We have a few “guest” submissions. Peter Hale of Madshus dug into his archives for some great shots – he was obviously not eligible for prizes but wanted to add to the selection.
Prizes:
1st – Madshus backpack
2nd – Madshus ski bag
3rd – Madshus baseball cap and beanie
We also gave away a pair of skis as part of this contest. The lucky winner has been notified.
Our panel of judges voted, and here are the winners!
First Place – Tim Kelley
3/6/75 - 1975 Jr. Nationals. Besides the trademark 70?s drool, this picture shows Fischer fiberglass skis the first year they were available in the US, Lilljedahl aluminum poles (graphite poles would arrive the next year) and Suveren leather boots with fancy Bergens plastic bindings. Don?t look too close, but the Eastern Ski Association one piece Odlo suit does not have a zipper in front. I didn?t realize I had been given a girls suit until I got to JNs. So, perhaps this is the only time a cross-dressing guy has won the JNs?! 😉
Judges’ Comments:
“Black and white contrast, the movement in the photograph, the drool, the look of utter determination.”
“The cutting edge technology, the event and who it is all adds up to a photo which is quite good on its own.”
Second Place – Edgar Hee
2/21/88 - Tahoe Donner XC President's Day Race Junior
Judges’ Comments:
“Interesting angles of all the equipment, great clothing and even better glasses – I think I saw those on the runway in Milan in 2009.”
“Wow: look at the height of that skate pole! And the glasses.”
Third Place – Dave Newton
2/15/49 - Dave Newton - First Place Maine State Collegiate Ski Championships 02/15/49 18 K Race @ Orono, Maine
Judges’ Comments:
“The onlooker makes this one the winner. a) not looking at the skier b) fancy coat and cigar and black shoes”
“I love the history, the young man in the background smoking a pipe and the high speed of the racer. Plus someone took the time to find this old photo and keep it all these years.” All Entries:

April 1974 Pal Tyldum (Norway), at North American XC Championships, Big Sky Montana. These were the waning days of wood skis at major championships, just a month following the World FIS Nordic Championships in Falun and the revolutionary success of fibreglass skis there. Tyldum, medalist at three consecutive Olympics, shows that good classic skiing doesn’t change that much, regardless of the skis. Photo: Peter Hale
December 1989 Salt Lake City World Cup, at Mountain Dell, Salt Lake City. Pal-Gunnar Mikkelsplass of Norway, showing again that good strong and relaxed classic skiing doesn’t change. This early-season World Cup, moved from Jeremy Ranch to Mountain Dell, introduced many US skiers to top racers from around the world years before the 2002 Olympics came to Salt Lake City. February 1992 Nina Kemppel , Jim Stray-Gundersen, John Farra, gathering with the USA Team for Opening Ceremonies at 1992 Olympics in Albertville, France. And looking good. Photo: Peter Hale
March 1991 Bjorn Lasserud of Minneapolis at World Masters Championships at Kincaid Park in Anchorage. Lasserud, winner of more National and World Masters championships than most people can count, is equally noted for his coaching and inspiration to countless others, to start and stay in Nordic skiing. February 1980 Juha Mieto of Finland, in the 1980 Olympic 30km at Lake Placid, where he won three medals. At 6’7″ or so, the ever-popular Finn could cover an impressive length of the course with each double-pole or classic stride, and when it counted, Mieto never backed off. Photo: Peter Hale
April 1979 Ken Alligood (l.), US National Biathlon Team Coach, Nat Brown (r.), PNSA Coach and later USST and US Biathlon Head Wax Coach, with — can anyone help? — we believe Joanne Musolf of PNSA, at US Junior XC Nationals at Squaw Valley, California. Photo: Peter Hale
