Snow in Anchorage!

Yesterday was a beautiful Sunday, the kind of Sunday that people dream about. Crepes, sledding, snowfall, burgers for lunch, Top Gear, the works. After a tough and rewarding time trial up at Hatcher Pass on Saturday, Sunday really hit the spot. It was definitely good for the soul, in addition to the tired legs.

Anchorage has been inundated with a lot of snow in the past couple of days, and while the driving is a little bit iffy, the skiing is about to be brilliant. It is supposed to keep snowing a little bit for the rest of the day, but we already have enough at hillside to make perfect ski conditions. After some grooming and cold weather, it’s going to be fantastic.

Aside from the awesome skiing, the snowfall is also a sort of symbol. In my mind, it’s like a gong indicating the start of the season. It harmonizes with a slew of other indicators that racing is about to begin. This week is our first week of toned-down training, my body is coming out of training suppression, snow is everywhere, we’re time trialling twice this week, and we’re only two weeks from hitting the road!

Every year is different, but this christmas-like anticipation happens annually. I just cannot wait to hit the road: throw down against other North Americans, find out how well preparations really went, and spend some time bopping from race to race with my buddies at APU. It’s going to be a great year!

[Another great indicator that things are going well: the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner posted the Fast and Female writeup on the sports page a few days ago. We’ll get more girls next year! Fairbanks Daily News-Miner – Rorabaugh pays it forward with Fast and Female in Fairbanks ]
