Soldier Hollow is the second stop on the eight-city Balance
Bar Adventure Sprint Series this summer. Adventure racers, ranging from coed
elite teams to first-time challengers, will be competing at Soldier Hollow
on June 8.
Participants will be testing their skills in trail running, mountain biking
and kayaking across and adjacent to the same terrain that hosted the Olympic
biathlon and cross-country skiing events. Additionally, team dynamics and mental
strength will be challenged by the mysterious "special tests" such
as "The Wall" and the "Mud Pit" for which the Series has
been known.
"We are extremely excited to be going to Soldier Hollow this year,"
said race director Nick Moore. "It is a beautiful venue tucked up against
the mountains that will take the athletes breath away in more ways than
one. The altitude will most likely have some bearing on the athletes, but what
is adventure racing without Mother Nature throwing in a challenge or two."
In the Balance Bar Adventure Sprints, teams of three complete 5-8 miles of trail
running, 10-15 miles of mountain biking, 1-3 miles of kayaking and 8-10 special
tests. Divisions include coed elite, coed, female, male, college, corporate
and a masters division (combined ages of 120+). The series will be televised
on the Outdoor Life Network in half-hour features (air dates to be determined).
A free general interest clinic will be held on May 31 from 1-3 p.m. at Galyans
in Gateway on South Rio Grande Drive with basic instruction on adventure racing
and different disciplines. Visit www.BalanceBarAdventure.com for online
registration or call (203) 352-5216.
