Norwegian Olympic hero Ivar Formo found dead

Former Olympic Champion Ivar Formo (55) of Norway was found drowned on Tuesday night in a lake in the Nordmarka forest outside Oslo.

Olympic gold: 50 km 1976 Innsbruck, Olympic silver: relay 1972 Sapporo and 1976 Innsbruck. Won the first unofficial World Cup in 1974. Olympic bronze: 15 km 1972 Sapporo, 4 World Championship bronze medals, 6 Norwegian Championships, 4 silver and 2 bronze, World Championship bronze in orienteering (relay) 1974.
Ivar Formo was also a former FIS member and a successful business man.

Formo was found in the Store Sandunger Lake at 10 PM on Tuesday.

The former Olympic champion had planned to alternate jog and ice-skate the 45 kilometer from Hadeland to Oslo.

He and a friend started at 12:30 but separated at 14:30. Formo was announced missing when he didn’t show up at an agreed upon meeting place later in the afternoon.

A large search was started in the area and included two helicopters, 10 police cars, motorcycles, search dogs, friends and volunteers.
