Weekend Racing Recap

Editor's Note: The Regional Recap is a new FasterSkier feature. Our hope is to provide results and summaries on regional events. Because of the number of races going on, we can't even begin to track down information on all events. We are completely dependent on submissions from race organizers, coaches, and readers. Please send us write-ups, photos and results, and we will do our best to get them up on the site. All submissions must be received by 12:00 PM EST on Monday to be included. Photos should be sent as individual files (not embedded in a document) and please include a link to on-line results.

EAST

Mid-Atlantic JOQ – Osceola Tug Hill Ski Center

A fast 5 km skate on a sunny day. Temp around 2 C and great snow.
Taylor Leach (XC Oregon) and Bryan Pepper (St. Lawrence University) take overall wins.
Elizabeth Izzo (NYSEF) and Bryan Pepper again (SLU) take junior victories.

Notchview Berkshire Trails Criterium Classic – Windsor, MA

A large field showed up for the criterium format race in Western Massachusetts. Two events were held – a “citizens” class and an “elite” class. The race generally followed bike racing criterium rules with some modifications – skiers raced on a 1.25km loop for 35 minutes. Racers completed their final lap, and the skier who completed the most laps wins – for skiers completing the same number of laps, the fastest time wins.

The course wound through pine and hardwood forests and offered competitors a challenging climb and winding downhills. An extremely strong field was present for the classic event. Juergen Uhl (GER) of UVM edged Olympian and former Berkshire County high school racer Patrick Weaver at the line. Anders Folleras (NOR) of Montana State University was third. In the women's race, Carina Hamel, another former local back on her home course, took the victory ahead of Corinne Preuot of Burke Mountain Academy. Ilke Van Genechten (Madshus) was third.

ALASKA

The home of the 2008 USSA Junior Olympics saw the christening of the new sprint loop and a revised Elliott's Climb for a great weekend of racing at Kincaid Park. The snow cover was thin but skiable. This required a technique change to all freestyle for the sprint racing on Saturday and the Mass Start races on Sunday. The weekend of racing was made possible by a large corp of snow moving volunteers from the Anchorage racing scene to place snow in critical areas. During the work activities on Thursday afternoon, a two hour blizzard put an additional 2-3 inches on the trails.

COLORADO (Weekend of the 15th)

It was a busy racing weekend in Colorado. Friday and Saturday the juniors opened their season with first Junior Olympic Qualifying races in Vail. Skiers looked great on the tough 5km course at over 9000ft.
