CXC Takes Innovative Approach to Periodization

Bryan Fish is the former CXC Team Vertical Limit head coach, and now coaches for the U.S. Ski Team. FasterSkier approached Fish about CXC’s unique approach to periodicity–the sequencing of hard and easy blocks in a training plan–and this was his response. We got an e-mail from a reader with a story idea—he mentioned that CXC takes a different approach to periodicity, alternating hard weeks with easy weeks rather than doing the typical three-week progression....

Both Speed and Smarts Make One Athlete Successful

Annie Hart of St. Paul, Minnesota is the 2009 Minnesota State High School Champion, 2010 State runner-up, a three-time All State recipient, 2010 Junior 5k champion, three-time Junior Olympian, and a U.S. World Junior team member. But skiing isn’t all that Hart can do well. She also ran on the St. Paul Academy cross-country and track teams and excelled academically throughout her high school career, earning her the honor of being named 2010 Star Tribune...

Central Cross Country Ski Association (CXC) is pleased to welcome Jason Cork as Elite Coach for CXC Team Vertical Limit.  This position was vacated by Bryan Fish in May as he was asked to join the US Ski Team as a Continental Cup Coach. Fish has been with CXC from the formation of the Elite Team in 2006, and saw two athletes compete at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games as well as see six athletes...

There are very few coaches for whom taking a job with the U.S. Ski Team (USST) is a step down in intensity. But after 300 days on the road last year as head coach of the Central Cross Country (CXC) program, that might just be the case for Bryan Fish. Last week, Fish was announced as the USST’s new Continental Cup coach, completing a USST staff reorganization that began in April when Chris Grover took...

Koos, Elliott, Others to Fall Back on Clubs

Athletically, Tad Elliott and Torin Koos don’t have much in common. At 21, Elliott is a distance specialist, and still developing. Koos is a sprinter, and at 29, he’s in the latter half of his career. The two things they do share? Both had hopes of making the 2010-2011 U.S. Ski Team—and both were left off the roster. As part of a shift in strategy under new Head Coach Chris Grover, the team announced last...

With their wins in today’s classic sprints, Phil Widmer and Rebecca Dussault both swept the Madison SuperTour weekend.  Both the men and women chose to double-pole the soft course around Madison’s Capital Square. In a repeat of yesterday’s dominating performance, Dussault qualified first, won her semi-final looking relaxed, then skied away from the rest of the women in the A final.  After her the results sheet was identical to the day before, with Maria Stuber...

Dussault, Widmer take Madison SuperTour Criteriums

Phil Widmer and Rebecca Dussault take victory at the Madison SuperTour Criterium races. Dussault, the 2010 ITU Winter Triathlon Championship, blew away a small but talented women's field to take an authoritative victory. Widmer over came a tough men's field made up of top Americans and Canadians to take victory in what was for many the first Nordic criterium of their careers.

The Central Cross Country Ski Association Adaptive Program is pleased to announce the receipt of a $10,000 grant from The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation for the furtherance of the CXC Adaptive Cross Country Program. Brian Gregg, winner of today’s SuperTour, gives the scoop

Brian Gregg picked up two podium finishes in this weekend’s SuperTour in Telemark, WI.  Racing for CXC, Gregg placed third in yesterday’s classic race and then outsprinted teammate Matt Liebsch for the win in today’s mass start skate race.  Gregg took a break from packing his bags (flying to the Canmore World Cups) to give the scoop on today’s race. How did the race play out – when did the field spread out and when...

Matt Liebsch Sharpens Stride Before Canmore

Matt Liebsch, CXC,  will soon be headed to the Canmore World Cup races, and in yesterday’s SuperTour race he proved he was further sharpening his speed.  At last weekend’s SuperTour in Minneapolis he won the skate race and took fifth in the classic race. Liebsch was just two seconds behind Bryan Cook in the 10km individual start classic race yesterday in Telemark, Wisconsin.  Liebsch gives Fasterskier a taste of the race, in which he and...

Dussault and Cook top podium in Telemark SuperTour classic

Telemark, WI Team CXC dominated their home turf yesterday by taking 5 out of the 6 podium places in the 5/10km classic races of the Telemark SuperTour. In the women’s 5km race Rebecca Dussault won by a commanding 31 seconds over teammate Maria Stuber, mimicking their 1-2 placements in both of last weekend’s SuperTour races in Minneapolis. Third place went to Melissa Schwartz, who finished another 13 seconds behind Stuber, both previous teammates at NMU....

Brian Gregg and Rebecca Dussault, both of CXC Team Vertical Limit, pulled away from the field during yesterday’s SuperTour in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  FasterSkier caught up with them to ask them about their wins and what’s next. Some racers indicated yesterday that the weather was starting to make the course challenging and there were nearly 500 racers on course, so even the firmest of snow can deteriorate in such situations. How were things out there today?...

CXC 2010 Nationals Waxing Report

CXC had a successful national championships.  Out of the 4 races, CXC skiers (including Caitlin Compton who CXC was waxing for) had a total of 9 top 5 finishes.  Below are CXC coach Bryan Fish’s comments on waxing for the week. US Nationals on an Olympic year generated added excitement. Add the fact that the US Olympic slots have initially been set at eight and you have a situation where the smaller details become increasingly...

After Tad Elliot skied his way to a second place finish in yesterday’s 15k freestyle, the cross country cognoscenti didn’t quite express the same degree of confusion as they did over Tyler Kornfield’s fourth place in the sprint. After some solid racing at last year’s West Yellowstone SuperTours and a trip to the U-23 championships, Elliot has a little more name recognition. But it’s safe to say that there probably weren’t many people here in...

Anybody Can Ski on Snow” – Training to Race Fast Without Snow

In the past month, the CXC Team Vertical Limit has been all over the west skiing on awesome trails with abundant snow.  We raced in West Yellowstone, MT, Bozeman, MT and Silver Star, B.C.  Although these trips are a blast, early season races are extra challenging because most athletes competing have spent only 10 days (or less) skiing on snow.  Whether you get the chance to travel to snow in November or not, there will...

Cross Training for Nordic Skiing

www.cxcacademy.com for more strength training ideas. It is important to remember the value of cross training in order to keep skiing enjoyable. I like to mix up my training, especially on low volume weeks, so that I’m not just “skiing easy.” Mix it up, try new activities, and remember that almost anything active can be considered cross training for Nordic skiing.
