Patterson, Yeaton, UAF Take Victories at Alaska Nordic Cup

APU’s Scott Patterson and Jessica Yeaton, UAA’s Hailey Swirbul, and the UAF team all skied well in Fairbanks over the weekend in the continent’s first FIS races. Patterson jokes that he plans to purchase a time turner, so that he can “continue to win every single race in the U.S.”

U.S. Distance Nationals 50 k Brings Some to the Brink; Bjornsen Wins Battle for First

The men's final distance race of the season in Craftsbury, Vt., saw APU's Erik Bjornsen stride away to his second win of the week, taking the men's 50 k classic mass start title at U.S. Distance Nationals by more than 1 1/2 minutes.

Norris Wins 10-Lap Anchorage Tour; Brooks Tallies Third Title

A first-time racer and a former champion returning after a long absence skied to convincing victories in the Anchorage Tour 30 k freestyle on Sunday, the shortened version of the 50 k Tour of Anchorage which took place on a 3 k loop at Kincaid Park.

The primary purpose of this event is to get women out and take away their excuses. It certainly is a nice date and the event gets done in time to watch the Super Bowl. Race Director, Tamra Kornfield said 500 women signed up for the event this year, a slight drop from last year’s numbers but the goal is to get more women interested in the sport as well as supporting a good cause....

Caitlin Gregg had her mind set on winning Saturday's American Birkebeiner and led much of the last 14 kilometers to the finish to secure her record-breaking fourth Birkie win. A newcomer to North America's largest ski race, Alaska's David Norris beat three Frenchmen by seconds to win the men's title.

Patterson won by more than 30 seconds and CU's Mads Strøm edged Packer for second.

Kris Freeman knew he couldn't let the U.S. nationals 30 k classic mass start come down to a sprint. The seasoned veteran sat patiently throughout the three-lap race on Thursday, then attacked with 2 1/2 kilometers to go to take the title by 3.7 seconds over APU's Lex Treinen.

Strøm Surges Past Havlick to Win Bozeman SuperTour 15 k Classic

It was yet another men's SuperTour race that was undecided until the finish line. This time, Mads Strøm came from behind and outsprinted Miles Havlick to win by 0.7 seconds in the Bozeman 15 k classic mass start. Matt Gelso took third for his second podium of the weekend.
