USST Men and Women Take Gold in Team Sprint

The US Ski Team’s top two teams both took first place in an extremely exciting series of evening team sprints today at Birch Hill. Liz Stephen and Morgan Smyth raced a very strong race, full of attacks, to finish just in front of CXC’s Caitlin Compton and Maria Stuber. In the mens’ race Chris Cook and Torin Koos skied to a dominating finish in the men’s final, which held a pack of 10 skiers nearly through...

Tonight, Caitlin Compton and I skied our way to 2nd place in the team sprint competition.  This was probably the best race of my career so far.  I can not get the photos to upload, so check out Kristina Owen’s website for now.  I will write more tomorrow.

Strandberg and Southam Win US Nationals 5/10km Classic

Fairbanks, Alaska – James Southam (APUNSC/Atomic) and Kristina Strandberg (Saab Salomon Factory Team) won the rescheduled 5/10km US Nationals classic race yesterday.  This race was originally scheduled for January in Anchorage, but was canceled due to cold temperatures. Weather was not a problem in Fairbanks with sunny skies and temperatures in the teens.  However, the recent explosion of Mt. Redoubt prevented some skiers from reaching Fairbanks in time for the race, including Canadian World Cup...

Last night I got my first National Championship since 2006! I knew when I won my last one that any win could be your last so to get back on top after a rough couple years feels super good.

I was the 4th starter in the "A" seed so I knew that there were a lot of fast guys behind me so there wouldn't be much information to get from the time checks out there. I just had to ski as fast as possible and hope my time would hold up. After I finished I heard how many guys were not far back after the halfway and I started to get real nervous, even a little queasy. Finally I heard the announcement that I was the National Champ and it was all smiles!

This past week I have been really nervous about this first race because my body has felt awful. Just sluggish and tired since last Sunday... Finally after a few days up here with some tune up workouts and some solid couch time my body finally started to come around the morning of the race. Still I had no idea if I would be able to ski fast or not. Out on the course I had no clue what I had, I was just going as fast as I could with what my body could do. Fortunately it was enough.

Yesterday was a sweet day for APU with 3 on the National Championship podium. Becca Rorbaugh, 2nd US and Brent Knight, 3rd US. First time on the podium for both of them.

Now it's a couple days recovery and get ready for Friday nights pursuit.

The Eastern High School Championships

This past weekend, the fastest high school skiers in New England and New York flocked to Rangeley, Maine to ski in the Eastern High School Championships.  The year’s final major competition welcomed athletes back from the Junior Olympics in Truckee, CA, and also younger skiers who had raced in the New England J2 Championships the previous weekend.  Teams from Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont brought twenty-four boys and girls to race in...

This is a collection of musing on the race that surprisingly didn’t fit into my tome of a race report. Thank You! First off, it’s time to finally thank the people that made this race possible for me: My wife Linda - I know, I’ve thanked her a lot already, but I can’t say enough about all she [...]

View the mass start (46km skiers only) and some of the top men at the 2009 California Gold Rush, held this past Sunday March 22nd at Royal Gorge in Soda Springs, CA, just minutes from Auburn Ski Club, the site of the 2009 Junior Olympics. This year’s event was marked by a full-on, heavy-duty sierra snowstorm that started the day before the race and continued through the night and throughout the race. Conditions were reasonably...

Two days in March has gone a long ways towards changing my opinion of Fairbanks. While it’s still ridiculously cold (below 0°F) in the mornings, the sun actually comes up in the sky a little (and stays there) to the point where we’re seeing highs around 20. Actually, the skiing the last two days has been great. The snow is still squeaky cold, but skiing with temps in the teens really isn’t bad. And it’s hard to complain about waxing when VR40 is plenty of kick and really on the slow side.

Racing starts tomorrow at the late hour of 6PM, which does make me wonder what to do with the rest of the day. Normally I’d think daylight would be an issue, but it’s a little different up here this time of year. It takes at least an hour and a half for the sun to rise, and once it does, it just sort of stays at late afternoon type sunlight all day – until 8 or 830. So it might be cold, but it won’t be dark.

The only other news of note right now is that Mt. Redoubt erupted last night. There are some issues involved in flying between Fairbanks and Anchorage right now (can’t do it), so let’s hope that clears up by Sunday…

Swank, Vinogradova Win 2009 California Gold Rush in White-Out Conditions

Challenging conditions for Gold Rush competitors Donner Summit, CA— More than a foot of snow fell on Donner Summit overnight Saturday and continued prior to the start of the annual California Gold Rush, a 46k cross country ski race held at Royal Gorge. The weather resulted in a delayed start and slight course change. The races started at 9:30 a.m. and instead of a two-lap 21k loop, Gold Rush competitors skied three laps of a...
