This Saturday 86 Fairbanksans signed-in for the third annual Nordic Ski Club Fairbanks Ski Your Age in Kilometers. As the name suggests, participants take to the trails at Birch Hill Cross Country Ski Center with the goal of skiing as many kilometers as their age in years.
The event is a very informal affair, loosely organized this year by FXC, the NSCF’s junior racing/training program. Participants show up for the event at a convenient time, sign-in and write their goal on the sign-in sheet. Goals ranged from the standard to the more creative, including ‘stay warm!’, ‘finish xmas shopping’ and ‘IQ.’ When the skiers have reached their goal (or have to take leave for holiday commitments) they come inside and mark down the number of kilometers they have skied.
This year’s skiers completed a total of 2,046 kilometers, with 53 skiers matching the event’s namesake goal. In an effort to create more attainable and/or challenging goals, this year’s event introduced rough graduated Gold, Silver and Bronze Standards which took into the account the relative difficulty for a given age group to complete the goal. 32, 7 and 26 skiers reached the Gold, Silver and Bronze Standards, respectively.
Notable performances were put in by many, including NSCF groomer Andy Blossy who skied an impressive 60 km, Kristin and Ned Rozell who took turns watching their infant daughter while the other took to the trails, and 16 year-old Lathrop High School ski team captain Reese Hanneman who skied an impressive 52 km.
