Frode Estil will be skiing his last World Cup race on Sunday. But he ensures that he has no plans of racing in a suit and tie or to get overly emotional.
final World Cup race is the relay in Falun, Sweden on Sunday. That concludes 10 years on the World Cup circuit.

– It has not hit me yet. I have no big emotions at this point, but it might start to sink in when I sit down on the bus after Sunday’s race, says Estil .

Important to finish in style

Estil will end his carrier with 115 World Cup starts. He has been on the podium 20 times, including 5 at the top. He has 3 Olympic medals and 6 World Championship medals on his resume.

– Everything has it’s time and my time is out. The motivation to start a new summer with hard dryland training isn’t 100 percent, and that’s not good enough if you want to race with the best, says Estil.

He isn’t interested in racing one more season at half engine just to participate.

But he wants to finish in style in Falun — by skiing fast!

– You won’t see me in a suit and tie or making other practical jokes in my final race. I want to finish by racing fast. That’s important to me, says Frode Estil.

Retires with a smile

He is racing the pursuit on Saturday and the relay on Sunday.

– I’m in good shape and am planning on being in the front group in the pursuit. I want to ski the relay as well and it shouldn’t be a problem doing that since we will probably race two teams, says Estil.

Estil can look back at some great years on the international circuit. He made the national team in the spring of 1996 and has experienced a lot. But it’s no doubt in his mind what he ranks highest.

– World Championship gold in the 50 kilometer at the 2005 Worlds in Oberstdorf is my best memory and probably my best performance. But I could also mention winning a Norway Cup race 15 years ago as very satisfying.

Frode Estil will be coaching at Meråker high school from this fall and is looking forward to that.

– This season has been surprisingly good so I’m retiring with a smile, says the veteran.
