Kris Freeman spends most of the winter living out of a suitcases and a ski bag while racing World Cups in Europe representing the US Ski Team. This time of the year, he calls Andover, NH his homebase.
1. Another season in the bag. Can you share with us a re-cap of your
winter? Some of the highs, lows, anything else you care to share.
I had a very good season. I started the year with a top twenty in at the first world cup in Gaellivare Sweden and ended the year with a top twenty in the last world cup in Falun Sweden. I had four other top twenties inbetween, including my first top ten finish since 2003. I enjoyed racing well consistently and was having fun in all of my races except one. The 15k freestyle at the world championships was a heartbreaker. I picked that event as the focal point of my season and I felt fantastic the day of the race. Everyone reading this know that a snow squall came through and wreaked havoc on the field causing random results. My result was horrific and all I could do was sit in the snow in stunned silence after the race.

2. What did you spring training/recovery consist of? Did you get
out-of-town for a bit?
My girlfriend, Julie, is a dancer in the David Parson's modern dance company based in New York City. So I spent a few weeks in the big apple after the season. I like to go somewhere with a lot of sun and a beach later in the spring. I might go to Cancun on a down week in June.

3. Anything new for next year/season?
Returning to a volume based training plan worked extremely well for me this year. I plan to follow the same plan with some changes to my intensity sessions. I will put more focus on anaerobic speed and efficiency over the final kilometers of my races. I was frequently in
the top ten or top five with 3ks to go and without slowing down I would drop to fifteenth. The pace on the world cup speeds up as the race goes on.

4. What tips can you offer junior skiers for training for this time of the
season?
It is imortant to train well year round. The racing season starts in November and goes though the end of March. That leaves only seven months for preparation. Don't waste any time.

6. How's being an uncle ?! (older brother is Justin Freeman)
My brother's baby girl, Iris, is growing fast. She was born in October and is up to 20 lbs now. The other day I was playing with her and if I held her upright she would start trying to jump. That was cool. Later while her mom gave her a bath, Iris started splashing water everywhere. I
fiigured out that if I waved my arms around and jumped up and down Iris would splash harder. Justin was glad that I was encouraging his daughter to be destructive. What are uncles for?

Thanks Kris!
