2007 December

The National Cross Country Ski Education Foundation (NCCSEF) has received a generous donation of $50,000 over a three-year period to help fund athletes under the age of 25 IF we can match that amount with donations from the ski community. This exciting challenge will help us better support the athletes who will have the greatest impact on U.S. performance in the 2010 Olympics: those skiers between the ages of 20-25 (a.k.a., U25). If you, the...

The 2007-08 World Junior Biathlon Trials, originally scheduled for December 28-30, have been moved from Anchorage to Mt. Itasca in Minnesota. Race organizers in Anchorage gave up the competitions due to poor snow conditions at Kincaid Park and no alternate venue in Alaska of the size and quality needed to host a national event. In an email to race volunteers and competitors, chief of competition Joel Hubbard shared the news. “I know this decision will...

Editor's Note: The Regional Recap is a new FasterSkier feature. Our hope is to provide results and summaries on regional events. Because of the number of races going on, we can't even begin to track down information on all events. We are completely dependent on submissions from race organizers, coaches, and readers. Please send us write-ups, photos and results, and we will do our best to get them up on the site. All submissions must...

RYBINSK, Russia (Dec. 16) – Kikkan Randall (Anchorage, AK), who posted the first U.S. women's World Cup cross country podium last January, produced the first U.S. women's victory Sunday, winning a sprint in Rybinsk. She defeated world champion Astrid Jacobsen of Norway in the final meters of a 1.2K freestyle course for the first American win since Bill Koch in 1983. “Last year [when she was third], I was too tentative to make a move...

RAMSAU, Austria (Dec. 16) – Bill Demong (Vermontville, NY) turned in the second-fastest 7.5K race Sunday and moved up 14 places in a World Cup hurricane start sprint event. He was sixth behind Germany's Bjoern Kircheisen, who couldn't catch Demong as he won his third World Cup in a nordic combined individual competition a week ago. In the hurricane start, skiers form a coil at distances behind the jumping leader based on a handicap formula...

Morgan Arritola of the US Ski Team won the women's 15km freestyle event at Soldier Hollow. Arritola edged USST teammates Tazlina Mannix (APUNSC) and Laura Valaas (APUNSC) by 4 and 7.9 seconds respectively. Arritola's previous best finish this season on the SuperTour was a 9th place in the 8km Classic in West Yellowstone. Mannix bested her third place from last weekend's 10km freestyle in Bozeman. Neither of the women raced in yesterday's sprint. SuperTour leader...

Editor's Note: FasterSkier's roving reporter Tucker Sawin is reporting from Rybinsk, Russia this weekend, giving us first-hand information on the World Cup Cross-Country races. Andy Newell had an outstanding day today, unfortunately, a tangle-up at the top of the hill in the semifinals robbed him of the chance to produce a matching result. Newell qualified 10th, but went on to dominate his quarterfinal heat, exploding out of the pack mid-way up the climb. In the...

Editor's Note: FasterSkier's roving reporter Tucker Sawin is reporting from Rybinsk, Russia this weekend, giving us first-hand information on the World Cup Cross-Country races. In a dominant display today, Kikkan Randall won the first ever World Cup for an American woman. She finished 2nd in qualifying and consistently distanced herself from the field in her heats. In the final, Randall came out of the pack on the climb and had a couple meters on Astrid...

Kikkan wins.  Newell 7th.  Hearty congratulations to Alaska Pacific University Coaches, Athletes and Support Crew!   Great work Erik Flora, Frode Lillefjell, Holly Brooks and the whole APU staff. Congratulations to Chris Grover, the USST staff and to the USST wax team and Justin Wadworth that are in Russia right now. And of course GREAT JOB KIKKAN!

Even Sletten continued his run of strong performances on the SuperTour sprint circuit, taking his first victory of the season. Reid Pletcher (SVSEF) was second and Marshall Greene (Alpina/Madshus) took third. Sletten posted the fastest qualifying time by a significant 4.5 seconds and won each of his heats on the way to the top of the podium. In the women's race, Kjersti Boe found a way to better Sletten's performance, dominating every step of the...

Editor's Note: FasterSkier's roving reporter Tucker Sawin is reporting from Rybinsk, Russia this weekend, giving us first-hand information on the World Cup Cross-Country races. Much like the women’s race, the men’s race turned into a race of attrition, followed by a mad sprint to the finish, and, once again, a Norwegian sprinter came out on top. Tor Arne Hetland won out of a bunch sprint of nearly 20 skiers, with a surprise Ville Nousiainen of...

Editor's Note: FasterSkier's roving reporter Tucker Sawin is reporting from Rybinsk, Russia this weekend, giving us first-hand information on the World Cup Cross-Country races. Twenty year old, and World Sprint Champion, Astrid Jacobson of Norway won today’s women’s 15k skate out of a bunch sprint in Rybinsk, Russia. Natalia Korosteleva finished second and Liisa Roponen finished third, all three women were within 1 second of each other. The conditions were overcast and humid with a...

If you’re like me, the idea of making time for regular exercise just because it’s good for you is not enough. There must be a goal motivating us to skip watching T.V. and go run in the rain. Drop a few pounds? What, are you nuts? Eating cake for breakfast and grabbing a few pretzels from the jar at each pass is no big deal. Stretching? Only for the remote. At the age of twenty-two...

After two weekends of racing, Garrott Kuzzy (CXC) and Laura Valaas (APUNSC) are leading the overall SuperTour Standings. Both Valaas and Kuzzy have two victories and have scored points in all four events. Valaas is also leading the women's sprint rankings, winning both races. She is second to the Factory Team's Kristina Strandberg (SWE) in the distance rankings. Kuzzy leads the men's distance category and is third on the sprint list, behind Even Sletten and...
