“Fantastic!” That’s what Per Wiik says about his Madshus skiers’ World Cup results as both Cross Country and Biathlon World Cup circuits take a short break for Christmas. Wiik, the Madshus International Race Manager, has reason to be pleased as an impressive array of Madshus athletes have climbed the podium in nearly every World Cup race this season. Madshus skiers lead the Overall World Cup standings at the holiday break: Ole-Einar Bjoerndalen (NOR) leads in...

Editor's Note: The Regional Recap is a new FasterSkier feature. Our hope is to provide results and summaries on regional events. Because of the number of races going on, we can't even begin to track down information on all events. We are completely dependent on submissions from race organizers, coaches, and readers. Please send us write-ups, photos and results, and we will do our best to get them up on the site. All submissions must...

December 23, 2007 – Nordic ski racing is obviously alive and well in the Northern Sierra Nevada. In what was possibly the best-attended cross country ski citizen’s race at Auburn Ski Club on Donner Summit in modern history, the Paco’s Fun Race brought together young and wanna-be-young racers together in an amazing display of numbers and enthusiasm. Over 160 competitors jammed the trails at the Auburn Ski Club Training Center, with a multitude of cheering...

NENSA.net has an extremely useful 10-minute stretching program designed specifically for Nordic skiers. This program targets large muscle groups; hips, ankles, shoulders, and trunk. Objective is to improve ski-specific body alignment through muscle stretching and joint flexion, improve stability through a range of motion, and equalize left-right muscle dominance patterns. This routine comes from the NENSA archives courtesy of Fred Griffin. The routine includes step-by-step instructions with photographs illustrating each stretch. www.nensa.net Source: NENSA

Although there is no snow in the historical center of Prague and the weather forecast doesn't show any change for the next couple of days, the organizers of the Viessmann FIS Tour de Ski Stage and E.ON Prague Ski World Cup race at Hradcanske square on December 30th are optimistic: We have enough snow for the race! During last month, they produced 3500 cubic meters of artificial snow at the resort of Horní Vltavice. “Only”...

From the Yaroslav Military Air Base we loaded into buses for the ride into Rybinsk. Compared to last year’s eight-hour marathon from Moscow to race venue, this 2.5 hour ride was a welcome respite. A lead police car escorted us through Russia’s rutted country roadways. At every city intersection military roadblocks kept us out of traffic delays. Some serious planning went into getting all the athletes from Central Europe to Rybinsk. Nice. With nightfall came...

Cross-country skiing is much more than a walk in the park on skinny skis! Since the introduction of skating, higher technology equipment and new race formats such as sprinting, pursuits and mass starts, cross-country skiing has picked up speed and grown in excitement. The evolution continues, with athletes now performing feats on cross-country skis that are more closely associated with freestyle skiing and snowboarding. At the leading edge of this trend is “Xtreme X-Country”. In...

Preparations are on schedule in Vancouver as construction at the three Whistler Olympic competition venues – Whistler Sliding Center, Whistler Olympic Park (formerly known as the Whistler Nordic Venue) and Whistler Creekside — was completed by mid-December. While Whistler Creekside has been operational since the beginning of the ski season, doors officially opened in the new Whistler Olympic Park last Saturday, December 15, 2007. The inaugural activities saw more than 100 cross-country ski competitors of...

Kikkan Randall was born with a familial connection to the Olympics. An aunt and an uncle, Betsy Haines and Chris Haines, both competed in the winter games as cross country skiers. That connection continues today and proved visually profound following Randall's historic cross country World Cup win Sunday in Rybinsk, Russia. Randall's family sent a video toasting the accomplishment from her hometown of Anchorage, Alaska. Aunt Betsy, who competed in the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics,...

All photos are by Torin Koos. He also shared the following – Two weeks before Rybinsk I saw Kikkan ski faster than I have ever seen any girl ski. Ever. Kikkan was doing a speed session with the 2006 Olympic Sprint Champ, just kind of skiing away from her when dialing it up to ten-tenths effort. 'Wow,' I said aloud. Justin Wadsworth added, 'I just don't see how anybody can beat her if she skis...
