emContributed by Raleigh Goessling/em – This summer I had the opportunity to go train at a world class venue in a town that was enthusiastic and supportive of Biathlon. I skied on a rollerski loop with World Cup athletes. I received great support from local families and community members, and was coached by a National Team coach. I didn’t go to Torsby Sweden, Ruhpolding Germany, or Lillehammer Norway. I spent my summer in Fort Kent, Maine. br / br /I arrived in Fort Kent in early June. I immediately jumped into training. The rifle training was much more intense than I had ever experienced. Each shot taken had a purpose. The workouts where structured and there was always a goal for each session. I was thrilled to receive such specialized coaching. I learned a lot about shooting mechanics and training. It was really cool to be doing the same drills as National Team members and often doing them side by side with these athletes. This solid base of accuracy shooting was one of the most beneficial parts of my summer training. br /br /a href=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_mrH2aLzeZss/Spp7IJl4guI/AAAAAAAAARk/SVPOG7AuqQk/s1600-h/Raleight+attacking+corner.JPG”img style=”cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;” src=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_mrH2aLzeZss/Spp7IJl4guI/AAAAAAAAARk/SVPOG7AuqQk/s200/Raleight+attacking+corner.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5375744485164090082″ //abr /The author in action on the 10th Mtn. roller loopbr / br /The physical training I embarked on in Fort Kent was excellent and the facilities at 10th Mountain raised the level of my training. Fort Kent is an excellent place to be a biathlete. It is surrounded by scenic trails, and boasts a 3.5k rollerski loop. The rollerski loop was one of my favorite things about training in Fort Kent. I will miss being able to do rollerski combos and skiing in a car free environment. This summer I trained harder than I ever have in past. At first it was a little daunting, but after a few weeks I got a lot better at recovering from hard sessions and making the most of recovery workouts. Over the course of the summer I saw the most improvement in my shooting ability, specific ski strength, and ski technique. br / br /The best part about training in Fort Kent was being with motivated, professional, and dedicated athletes and coaches. Having other athletes around to push you through a hard workout and the constant threat of being ‘girled’ (beaten by a member of the opposite sex) was very motivational. I would like to thank Gary Colliander, Kathy Mayo, and Austin Ross for their coaching expertise. I would also like to thank the Mayo and Bernard families for helping me out this summer. br /br /For more on my summer at the MWSC in Fort Kent visit raleighbiathlon.blogspot.comdiv class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6813061107698506856-1892511523842765965?l=mwscbiathlon.blogspot.com’ alt=” //div
