Strength testing and Classic TT

Sverre CaldwellSeptember 5, 2009

Yesterday we did our general strength test. It is a simple test consisting of pull ups, bench press and leg press. Last spring we did some general strength work in our gym with the goal of reaching a strength level based on percentage of body weight. Everyone improved their strength and most reached their goals in our 7 week period. This summer, we have been doing quite a bit of specific strength and very little general strength. Our test was a good way to see what happens when you switch over to more specific training. br /We had some interesting results. On pull-ups, the group stayed pretty much the same (a couple of people went up, a couple went down). On bench, it seems that the stronger kids maintained their strength through specific strength and the weaker kids improved (maybe this is because they kept using their upper bodies all summer). The leg press results were about the same except for a couple of individuals who had worked on leg strength as one of their summer goals (these athletes saw solid gains). It was nice to see that we could keep our spring strength gains with good solid specific training. br /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/SqK58psR7jI/AAAAAAAAA5c/wNzuHqyQisQ/s1600-h/100_4423.JPG”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 259px; height: 320px;” src=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/SqK58psR7jI/AAAAAAAAA5c/wNzuHqyQisQ/s320/100_4423.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5378065356668661298″ //abr /We had another beautiful day and a bunch of new PR’s for our classic time trial today. The older boys and all of the girls did the 10 km, while our two J2 boys did the 5 km. We have done this course for 6-8 years so it is fun to follow improvement and to see how the current group stacks up against the alums. Course records for our skiers are held by Andy Newell (26:00) and Sophie Caldwell (31:23). Both of these skiers did well at Jr Worlds the year they posted these times. The first 5 kms rolls up and then down, the last 5 kms are tough and it ends with a killer 1 km uphill.br /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/SqK5izEm74I/AAAAAAAAA5U/YH1IV-HwrVw/s1600-h/100_4426.JPG”img style=”float:left; She can’t flex her foot much, but she can double pole. Here she is 9.9 kms in, on the top of stair stepper. That will help her get tough :)div class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/4680416899705879324-3134648048210375997?l=smsxc.blogspot.com’//div
