2009 November

The origin of the American Birkebeiner dates back to 1973, when 53 hearty skiers traveled 52 kilometers from Hayward, Wisconsin to Telemark Resort in neighboring Cable. Today, the American Birkebeiner is the largest, most prestigious cross country ski marathon in North America… second to none! Skiers from around the world gather every February to celebrate the “Birkie,” a race which has become a tradition in the cross country ski world. The Birkie is a member...

The racing season has finally begun.  It felt great to put on a bib and race against some of the best racers from the U.S. and Canada.  It was also great to be able to ski all of the trails here in West, unlike last year when we could only ski up on the plateau.  [...]

Starting just miles from the headwaters of the Great Mississippi River, in the land of the legendary Paul Bunyan, the 25km loop is more or less in two parts, the 15km on the East side of the highway has very gentle terrain after a somewhat steep climb from the start area. Then after skiing through a tunnel to the West side of the highway, the next 10km has sweeping downhill curves and some respectable uphills,...

It would be nice to say that it was a good start to the year with my two seventh place finishes this weekend. Actually it was a pretty mediocre beginning. I expect higher for myself and I cannot wait to start racing on some legit hilly courses over the next two weeks. Here is a sunny pic from our mellow long ski on Sunday. We all felt pretty blown out after the races. Fortunately the weather was good so it was pretty pleasant to be out for a long classic ski. We will be training in West until Thursday when we go to Bozeman for a skate sprint in town and 15k classic over the weekend.

Yesterday I went into Yellowstone National Park for a long, easy classic ski. There were a few trails along the river that were well tracked and the skiing along the access road was pretty good, with the exception of a few patches where the snow had been melted by the sun. I was joined by [...]

Continental Cup Preview: Tough Competition in Olympic Year

With the help of some good snow and skiing conditions, this year’s Continental Cup could be one of the most successful.  This is why: 1) The Nor-Am and Super Tour schedules mesh so as to encourage maximum participation in both series from both Canadian and US athletes. 2) With a large number of athletes competing to make it onto the Olympic Team, the best racers will be sure to make it to every race possible and the...

I am currently in Ostersund, Sweden waiting for the start of the World Cup in a few days.  Another training season has flown by and now it’s time for the fun to begin!  These last few days are pretty relaxed for me, as I need to be completely rested for the first block of World [...]

Ski camp is all about having a good time.  Here are a few photos from the past week. . . This photo really captures the essence of the Yellowstone Ski Festival, getting out and having fun on snow.  The town doesn’t salt or sand the roads, so you can ski or snowmobile practically anywhere in town.
