What is going to happen to skiing? Winters are warming, snowfalls are less consistent, and sprawl is eating up open land. I’ve been working on a project to fight back. A small group of us have formed an organization with the catchy name of The Central New England Nordic Council. Our mission is to buy the Windblown Ski Area now that its longtime owners have put it up for sale. Not only do we want to preserve its 40 kilometers of trails, but we want to improve it by putting in snowmaking and a 5K, John Morton-designed racing trail. With its location close to Boston and the site’s 1400 foot altitude we could provide guaranteed skiing to millions of people from Thanksgiving till spring.
Want to help? We need every person and every penny we can get to buy the place before some developer turns it into a cul-de-sac of McMansions. Go to www.nordicnow.org and make a pledge to help us out. We need even very small pledges to demonstrate the breadth of our community support. Some people with deep pockets are willing to help, but only if they see that you care too.
