Petter Northug is not feeling good and will not race the World Cup opener this weekend in Gällivare, Sweden.

“Petter says his legs feel heavy, and his body has not been on his side since the races at Beitostølen last weekend, and his workouts have also not been great this last week,” the Norwegian national team coach Morten Aa Djupvik told NRK.no.

Northug delivered less than optimal performances at Beitostølen, and he was sick after that. He postponed his trip to Gällivare, but now decided to sit out the races.

“He is not sick now, but he didn’t feel good Sunday and Monday. That’s why he chose to stay home. He is not sick, but just feels loaded down with training,” Djupvik said.

The second weekend of World Cup races in Kuusamo, Finland are also in danger for Northug, but no decision is made on those events yet. His main goal for the season is the World Championships in Oslo in February.
