Wow the skiing is good in Minnesota right now. I hope I didn't just jinx things, but considering that we are supposed to get another 6 inches of snow today, I am feeling pretty good about the skiing for the next month (still should probably knock on wo...

No New Biathlon Medalists in Men’s World Juniors Pursuits- Updated

While all of the medalists from Saturday’s youth and junior men’s sprints repeated on the podium in Sunday’s pursuits, there was still plenty of excitement on the second day of World Youth and Junior Biathlon Championships in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic. In the junior men’s 12.5 k pursuit, Germany’s Tom Barth, who started with bib one and a 16-second advantage over teammate Johannes Kuhn, had to fight just to stay on the podium after missing...

Harvey Skis to U23 Gold

It’s not very often that one hears the Canadian national anthem at the medals ceremony for a World Championships cross-country ski race. But sure enough, there it was on Monday, ringing out in the stadium in Otepaa, Estonia. Canadian Alex Harvey had just outsprinted Russian Evgeniy Belov to win the 30-kilometer U-23 pursuit race, collecting his first-ever gold medal from the International Ski Federation. “This year, even though there’s World Championships coming, I really wanted...

As before, with the U23 racers we typically have more data to work with, since these folks have generally been around longer and so are likely to have raced against each other more often. We’ll continue using the percent back difference plots, that examine how a particular skier has fared against each of their competitors [...] Related posts:

The Norwegians took all the fun out of Monday’s women’s relay at the World Junior Championships, winning by a comfortable margin over the Russians. But no matter—their men created enough suspense for two races. Trailing the Russians by 15 seconds heading into the final leg in Otepaa, Estonia, Norway’s Sindre Bjornestad Skar closed down the gap in the final kilometer, passing Denis Kataev in the stadium for a thrilling conclusion to the race, in what...

With a squad composed of four individual medalists, the Norwegians skied to victory in the women’s relay at the World Junior Championships on Monday. The Norwegians were trailing slightly to Germany after a tough first leg by Ragnhild Haga.  But Martina Ek Hagen took over, closed the gap, and handed the race off to Heidi Weng, who broke the Russian and Swedish teams with a big attack on the skate course’s steepest, toughest climb in...

Canadian Graham Nishikawa’s three-win weekend may not bring him up to the same number of wins as Norway’s Marit Bjoergen, but on Sunday the dominating domestic racer put on a skiing display worthy of the legendary Norwegian woman. Nishikawa, a member of the Alberta World Cup Academy (AWCA), finished the 15 k freestyle handicap start event with a whopping 2 minute 38.8 second lead over his nearest competitor, Drew Goldsack (AWCA/CNST), while Stefan Kuhn (CNST)...

Photo Credit: Gowtham [Michigan Tech] The last two weeks have been a bit of a struggle for me. I travel well, but I hit the training hard on Monday after flying in from Lake Placid and I caught a virus. I took it real easy most of the week and started feeling better near the [...]
