Happy May! With the start of a new training year, FasterSkier scanned social media for a sense of how nordic skiers kicked off Day 1 (and the days before) of the 2017/2018 season.

  • Kikkan Randall of the U.S. Ski Team (USST) and Alaska Pacific University (APU) “sneaking in some secret Mom training” while pushing her son Breck on April 30:

  • No spring snow for Noah Hoffman (USST/Ski & Snowboard Club Vail). Instead, he spent his first day of the new training season “slot canyoning” in the Subway at Zion National Park in Hurricane, Utah:

  • U.S. Ski Team members and Vermonters Andy Newell, Liz Stephen and Ida Sargent stood with Bernie Sanders in front of the Vermont State House in Montpelier for the People’s Climate March on April 29:

  • Dahria Beatty, of Canada’s U25 Team and Alberta World Cup Academy (AWCA), spent the weekend at Bysprinten in Mosjøen, Norway, where she placed fourth behind some World Cup regulars:

  • Certain U.S. national-team members made the trip to L.A. last week for a photoshoot for NBC Olympics:

  • Nothing like a backcountry skin up and ski down to get spring going. Newell (USST/SMS Elite Team) did just that last week in Bozeman, Mont., the hometown of his fiancée and Stratton Mountain School (SMS) teammate, Erika Flowers:

  • Also enjoying Montana’s backcountry, Caitlin Patterson (Craftsbury Green Racing Project):

  • Getting strong in the spring doesn’t always mean hitting the gym. Katharine Ogden (SMS/USST) got in an “alternative strength workout” in the Green Mountain Rock Climbing Center in Rutland, Vt., on April 20:

  • Some of us just aren’t ready for spring. Erik Bjornsen (USST/APU), newly engaged to Marine Dusser, pedaled his way to snow by bike as seen here on April 19 with the backdrop of the North Cascades National Park in Mazama, Wash:

  • We’re not really sure what NARP Fest is, but it looks fun (and incredibly funny). Biathlon Canada’s Sarah Beaudry was crowned champion at this year’s event at Mount Shark in Alberta:

  • Knute Johnsgaard (Canadian U25 Team/AWCA) got in some crust skiing last week in White Pass, just north of the U.S./Canadian border in British Columbia:

  • Who says an Easter egg hunt doesn’t count as training? Ian Torchia (Northern Michigan University/USST) put on his game face and running shoes for a family holiday egg hunt on April 16 in Rochester, Minn.:

  • Friends. Bikes. Good food. That’s the path to happiness for  Julia Kern (SMS/USST) as seen on the Kingdom Trails in East Burke, Vt.:

  • Oldies are goodies. Jenn Jackson (Lappe Nordic) went mountain biking on her old faithful “Rig” in Horseshoe Valley in Oro-Medonte, Ontario:

  • Reese Hanneman (APU) got his sweat on during a game of racquetball at the Alaska Club fitness center:

  • Last season’s overall SuperTour leader Scott Patterson (APU) soaked up the scenery and the stellar backcountry skiing in Alaska’s Chugach Mountains:

  • A few final k’s before the spring thaw: that’s how Sadie Bjornsen (USST/APU) and some of her APU teammates enjoyed the outdoors in Glen Alps in Chugach State Park, just outside Anchorage, last week:

  • US Biathlon’s Leif Nordgren recently took to the trails with his pup to hike Lyon Mountain in New York’s Adirondacks:

  • Deedra Irwin of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (SVSEF) found snow with her dog on Carbonate Mountain in Idaho’s Smokey Mountains:
