– As anyone reading this site is likely aware, retired American skier Kikkan Randall went public with a breast-cancer diagnosis in July of this year, mere months after teaming up with Jessie Diggins to win a gold medal at the Pyeongchang Olympics. But what happened after that? The Anchorage Daily News (ADN) recently published a six-part series, “Kikkan Randall’s cancer year,” that tracked Randall during her treatment and recovery, augmented by a video and dozens of photos. The reporting is intimate yet respectful, revealing, poignant, and very, very good. It ran on the front page of the print ADN over a week earlier this month. You can find it online here.
– As FasterSkier reported last month, Calgary voters went to the polls to express their views on whether or not the Canadian city should continue its efforts to remain in the running to host, and pay for, the 2026 Winter Olympics. A majority of voters said “no.” So what’s next for the future of the next winter games after Beijing in 2022? Deadspin’s headline in a recent article on the subject, “Nobody Wants To Host The Olympics Anymore,” doesn’t pull any punches. It begins, “The 2026 Winter Olympics will be held, somewhere.
