I know I am a little behind on this, and that the Tiger Mom craze is a bit passé, but I wanted to throw this out into the internet. Everyone has at least heard that Amy Chua wrote a book about parenting the ‘chinese’ way. She admits upfront that this term is controversial and imperfect, but she still uses it to signify a strict parenting style that isn’t low on high expectations. Her style is highly criticized and she has even received death threats from people who think that she abused her daughters. I came across a response to all this hullabaloo in the form of a letter by her daughter, and I think that it’s a great indication of ‘Tiger Mom’s success. Her daughter, who played at Carnegie Hall in middle school, is now going to Yale, is very happy that her mom raised her the way she did. The very last paragraph of her letter struck me as the perfect description of the essential ‘meaningful life’ dilemma. If you would like to read her letter I highly encourage it. I think it’s very insightful, especially considering the author’s age.
