Toblach, Italy – Justyna Kowalczyk (POL) took back the red Tour de Ski leader’s bib with a 11.6 second victory over Aino Kaisa Saarinen (FIN) in the 5km classic individual start.  Petra Majdic (SLO) was 3rd, 14.8 seconds behind Kowalczyk, and is second in the overall standings. Kowalczyk, a strong classic skier, and even better climber, had plenty of speed on the 5km course, a distance only contested on the World CUp circuit in the...

The conditions were seemingly perfect as it was sunny and blue skys with the temperature hovering around -4°C. The races were fast with the winning times of 23:14 for the men over 10km and 12:37 for the women over 5km. Today was a chance for those classic specialist take a bite out of the lead [...]

The course for tomorrows rather short courses – a 5km for the women and a 10km for the men – will see like sprints compared to today’s races. They will be in the classic style and the course appears to have a couple good climbs on it including one that rises 40 meters in elevation [...]

Toblach, Italy – Arianna Follis (ITA) thrilled the home crowd, winning today’s 16km point-to-point freestyle pursuit, and taking over the 2010 Tour de Ski Lead. Follis edged Petra Majdic (SLO) and Justyna Kowalczyk (POL), pulling away in the last 400 meters.  The three women worked together early to reel in leader Aino Kaisa Saarinen (FIN), who started 25 seconds ahead.  They not only caught her, but were able to leave her behind.  Saarinen finished 4th,...

Today saw the start of the distance races with the first point A to B race of the Tour. It was pursuit style so there were expectations of great battles and tactics on the course. The results of this race would determine the overall classification of the Tour. Simple concept: win the race and you [...]

Toblach, Italy – Peter Northug (NOR) won his third stage of the 2010 Tour de Ski, outsprinting Dario Cologna (SUI) and Marcus Hellner (SWE) in the 35km freestyle pursuit. The 2010 Tour de Ski is now half over, and the record field is rapidly dwindling in size.  This is the result of the confluence of two specific factors – the rule changes allowing skiers to keep World Cup points and prize money even if they withdraw, and the fact that it is an Olympic year. This is the 4th Tour de Ski, and the first to coincide with the Olympic Games.  A handful of...

Today is the first to two very deserved rest days for the athletes. With the sprint portion of the Tour done for another year, more and more athletes will be dropping out, particularly sprint specialists. One the men’s side, the most notables to leave the Tour will be leader Emil Jönsson, stage 3 winner Eldar [...]

Prague, Czech Republic – Natalia Korosteleva (RUS) won the fourth stage of the 2010 Tour de Ski, and her first ever World Cup race, riding a late charge in sloppy conditions in Prague. Korosteleva won an exciting final with numerous lead changes and one major crash.  Slovenian Vesna Fabjan, the top qualifier, led early followed closely by Korosteleva, Aino Kaisa Saarinen (FIN) Celine Brun-Lie (NOR) and Arianna Follis (ITA). Fabjan crashed on one of the...

Prague, Czech Republic – Emil Joensson (SWE) bounced back from a crash in yesterday’s sprint that may have cost him the victory, to win the skate city sprint in downtown Prague. The 1.2 km freestyle sprint marked the 4th race in 4 days for the Tour de Ski, and the flatter, faster course clearly favored the sprinters.  Petter Northug (NOR) and Axel Teichmann (GER), first and second in the overall entering the day, did not...

Today was final consecutive race day before a day off for the athletes. The Prague city sprints got off to a late start and saw the heats being run under flood lights. The track was tight quarters and who ever was in the lead at the first hair pin after the start would be nearly [...]

US Enjoying First Tour de Ski

Andy Newell is the first American to ever race in the Tour de Ski.  Through the first three events he has had an up and down time of it. Newell has only one more race in the Tour – tomorrow’s skate sprint in Prague.  He will then withdraw from the Tour and focus on training for several weeks. In the first event, the 3.7km prologue, Newell finished 48th.  He was in 25th at the 1.5km...

Majdic Builds Confidence with Victory

Oberhof, Germany – Petra Majdic (SLO) skied to victory in the third stage of the 2010 Tour de Ski.  Majdic bounced back from a tough race yesterday, and maintained her position as the Tour sprint leader.  Justyna Kowalczyk (POL) held onto the overall lead, finishing second. There was a clear division between the haves and have nots today. The top eight in qualifying held eight of the top nine spots on the final result sheet,...

Roenning Battles to Tour Sprint Victory

Oberhof, Germany – Eldar Roenning (NOR) won a hotly contested sprint final in the third stage of the 2010 Tour de Ski.  Roenning prevailed through challenging conditions to claim his sixth career World Cup victory, and his first since 2008. The weather was far from ideal in Oberhof this afternoon, with heavy snow falling and soft tracks.  These conditions combined with a long course of 1.6km, made for slow qualification times and an uncommonly spread...

After the Oberhof sprint, the athletes hopped in team vehicles and started their journey to the Czech Republic; unless your name is Virpi Kuitunen, then you hopped on a plane home back to Finland. The Prague sprint tomorrow will be exciting as it’s the first city sprint and it’ll be fast and furious as the [...]

Today was the final of three race days in Oberhof. With numerous of the top sprint specialists not pariticipating in the Tour de Ski, it opened the door to others to get a taste of sprint action such as Matti Heikkinen, Simen Ostensen, and Jens Filbrich. The weather seemed to co-operate more or less and [...]

Tomorrow’s sprint race will be surprisingly the first time a classic sprint has ever been run in the Tour de Ski. The forecast is calling for snow and temperatures hovering around -0C, it’ll surely be a wax technicians nightmare. I’m expect some athletes in the post-race interviews will have some words about how their skis [...]
