Freeman Claims 50k Title to End Season on a High Note

CRAFTSBURY, Vermont — For someone who was almost ready to hang up his skis and skip spring series altogether, Kris Freeman (SSC Vail/USST) sure knows how to turn things around over the course of a week. After fighting off a sinus infection during SuperTour Finals, and before that coming home from Europe disappointed with his World Cup season, Freeman handily defended his Distance Nationals 50 k title on Saturday, beating Tad Elliott (SSCV/USST) to the...

Video: Distance Nationals Women’s 30 k

CRAFTSBURY, Vermont — After 20 victory laps, the women are finished with their season. The fast pace set by Kikkan Randall, Jessie Diggins and Liz Stephen made for an exciting race; each pushed the pace and tried to break at some point, and the last two laps were an all out sprint. Randall prevailed, but as they crossed the finish line everyone was happy to simply be done. Interviews with top athetes follow the race...

On Hill Climb, Freeman Secures SuperTour Finals Title

JAY, Vermont — At the outset of the hill climb up Jay Peak on a blistery Wednesday morning, the four-race fight for the overall SuperTour Finals win had come down to two skiers: Kris Freeman (SSCV/USST) and Noah Hoffman (SSCV/USST). In the end, Freeman claimed the title just as he did in Sun Valley last spring: on a brutal pitch that left him and just about everyone else completely spent at the finish. Hoffman finished...

Diggins First to Top; Stephen Fastest in SuperTour Finals Hill Climb

JAY, Vt. – Every uphill has to end at some point. But what if it’s a mountain, and what if you can’t see the top? Nearly 70 women and 90 men probably thought something along those lines as they ascended a 1.8-kilometer freestyle hill climb at the Jay Peak alpine resort on Wednesday. As part of the SuperTour Finals, the event was a pursuit with the mini-tour leader starting first and the rest of the...

Video: SuperTour Finals Classic Sprints

CRAFTSBURY, Vermont — There were a few surprises on Tuesday during the classic sprints: distance specialists Kris Freeman and Liz Stephen made it to the A-final, while sprint standouts Simi Hamilton and Sadie Bjornsen got knocked out. But such is sprint racing, and our videographer was standing in the start and finish area to catch some of the action on film. Interviews with the top finishers follow, including some great reactions from athletes who were...

South of the Border at SuperTour Finals, Canada’s Crawford Wins Sprint

CRAFTSBURY, Vt. – In shades of red, blue, green and white, six highly competitive women stood at the start line at the SuperTour Finals on Tuesday waiting for their signal to get after the 1.6-kilometer classic loop one more time. On one end of the A-final lineup stood World Cup sprint champion Kikkan Randall, who flew in from Europe on Sunday. On the other, her World Cup teammate and distance specialist, Liz Stephen soaked up...

Packer Wins Classic Sprint Against Stacked Field

CRAFTSBURY, Vermont — If anyone can attest to the fact that feeling off during a qualifier is no reason to count oneself out for the heats, it’s Dartmouth senior Eric Packer. Despite having “blown up a bit” in the classic sprint prelim at SuperTour Finals on Tuesday, qualifying in 16th, he didn’t throw up his hands in defeat. Instead, he went on to win the thing outright, beating SuperTour regulars and US Ski Team members...

Bjornsen Paces APU Podium Sweep In Rainy Classic Mass Start

CRAFTSBURY, Vermont — Even though she now has a World Cup podium to her name, a win at SuperTour Finals had eluded Sadie Bjornsen (APU/USST) until Sunday morning, when she claimed the 10 k mass start classic on the second day of racing at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center. Rain isn’t usually at the top of the list of desirable ski conditions, but as the snow soaked through prior to start, Bjornsen couldn’t wait to start...

Freeman Rebounds With 15k Classic Win at Craftsbury

CRAFTSBURY, Vermont — Even in the morning rain, the men’s 15 k mass start classic played out essentially as expected on Sunday at the SuperTour Finals. A lead group of five separated themselves from the rest of the field fairly early, comprised of all the usual suspects in a domestic classic distance race. After keeping a consistent position at the heart of the lead group for the entire race, Kris Freeman (Team HomeGrown/USST) made his move...

Video: The Craftsbury Prologue

CRAFTSBURY, Vermont — Though the conditions were unique, the loop of man made snow held up well for the prologue on Saturday. The kickoff event of the 2012 SuperTour Finals had more of a relaxed atmosphere, as athletes enjoyed seeing old friends for the first time in months, and together got creative with their warm up routines. For many of the top finishers, including men’s winner Simi Hamilton (SVSEF/USST), the prologue was the first American snow...

Hamilton Cruises To Victory in SuperTour Finals Prologue

CRAFTSBURY, Vermont — Looking calm and relaxed as he finished the two-lap 3.2 k freestyle prologue on Saturday morning, Simi Hamilton (SVSEF/USST) skied to a comfortable win in the opening event of the SuperTour Finals at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center. He beat Sylvan Ellefson (Team HomeGrown) by 6.6 seconds, and in a tie for third, Noah Hoffman (Team HomeGrown/USST) and Erik Bjornsen (APU/USST) both claimed bronze (+11.5). Kris Freeman (USST), skiing for Team HomeGrown this...

True to Form, Diggins Demolishes Craftsbury Prologue

CRAFTSBURY, Vermont — She was busy posting top-20s on the World Cup just last week in Falun, Sweden, but Jessie Diggins (CXC/USST) clearly has plenty of gas left in the tank. For the SuperTour Finals 3.2 k freestyle prologue, she won by 7.2 seconds against a competitive women’s field. Holly Brooks (APU) took second and Sadie Bjornsen (APU/USST) finished third (+8.6), with another 7.5 seconds between third and Becca Rorabaugh (APU) in fourth (+16.1)....

Injury Behind Her, Stock Ready for World Juniors

Highlighted by her fourth-place performance in the senior freestyle sprint at U.S. Nationals, 17-year-old Corey Stock (Cambridge Sports Union) earned her first trip to Europe with the U.S. Ski Team’s (USST) World Junior Championship squad this coming February. It’s difficult to determine the most remarkable part of that statement. For starters, Stock’s age would normally make her a candidate for the J1 trip, and yet as the top junior finisher in the skate sprint in...

Since coming down with a whopper of a sinus infection nearly five months ago, Skyler Davis hadn’t felt like himself. In his first year on the U.S. Ski Team’s development squad, the 20-year-old tried to shake it. He tried at the U.S. Ski Team’s dryland camp in Lake Placid, N.Y, but he had to leave early to recover at home in Jericho, Vt. Afterward, Davis rallied and put forth the effort needed to earn his...

FIS Rejects Appeal; Koos Ready to Move On

After less than a week of deliberation, the International Ski Federation (FIS) Appeals Committee responded to the case Torin Koos (BSF/Rossignol) obstruction of competition. The Committee rejected his case for lack of sufficient evidence. In his appeal, Koos primarily took issue with the process by which the jury disqualified him, which he interpreted as a departure from the due process outlined in the FIS International Competition Rulebook (ICR). According to Koos, he was not allowed...

US Nationals, Men’s Classic Sprint Video

RUMFORD, Maine – The final day of the United States Cross Country Ski Championship saw some controversy during the A Final of the men’s classic sprint on the trails of Black Mountain.  Torin Koos (BSF) skied away from the rest of the heat, but was later disqualified for a questionable move, so the second skier across the finish line Tyler Kornfield (UAF) was crowned the national champion.  While we don’t have footage of the contentious moment...
