US Nationals

US Nationals is the premier event of the season. The top skiers in the country battle for championship titles. Coverage of events and related news.

In light of the reactions to Erik Remsen’s recent article “Nordic Skiing Must Become Greener”, as well as the Copenhagen climate talks, I decided that it was high time to carry out an idea I’d had last year as I sat in the airplane on my way to nationals in Anchorage.  I’ve spent considerable time thinking about the environmental effects of this sport that I love, and it seems to me that when it comes...

Christmas has come and gone, and the next phase of the season is just around the corner. The Cross-Country World Cup continues with the Tour de Ski, starting on January 1st in Oberhof, Germany.  The first three events of the Tour are in Oberhof – the Prologue, a 10/15km classical pursuit and a classic sprint. The Nordic Combined World Cup also picks up in Oberhof, overlapping with the Tour.  Two competitions are on the 2nd...

LAKE PLACID, NY (Oct. 10) – World Champion Todd Lodwick (Steamboat Springs, CO) made it an even 20 titles as he won the U.S. Nordic Combined Championships Saturday during Lake Placid’s annual Flaming Leaves Festival. For Lodwick, who had previously said having 20 U.S. titles would be great, the win on Saturday meant more than he thought it would. “This ranks up there with one of the more memorable national titles. I think I’m almost...

Nordic combined star Lodwick is after his 20th U.S. title, while ski jumper Van is shooting for 14. Weather has been cool in Lake Placid...

LAKE PLACID, NY (Oct. 8) – Having 19 U.S. Championship titles is a lot of success to have amassed as a competitor. But for World Champion Todd Lodwick (Steamboat Springs, CO), an even 20 sounds a lot nicer. Thankfully, Lodwick will have his shot at his 20th as the 2010 U.S. Jumping and Nordic Combined Championships hits Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid, NY, this Saturday. “Yeah of course it would nice to even it out...

The Flaming Leaves...

Stephen and Southam Win National Titles With Gutsy Tactics in Tough Races

Liz Stephen yet again showed how strong and gutsy she is, coming back from a slow start in the women’s 30K to overtake a charging Morgan Arritola for the National Title. The lead pack of Kikkan Randall, Morgan Arritola, Kristina Strandberg, and Rebecca Dussault broke early from the rest of the field with no remorse from a blasting lead by Arritola. Arritola skied a phenomenal race pushing the pace several times in an attempt to...

Stephen and Zimmermann Take Well Deserved Titles at Distance Nationals

The end of the season draws near with more exciting racing today in the Ladies’ 15K and Men’s 30K pursuit at Birch Hill in Fairbanks. The 3.5K course included plenty of challenging terrain coiling around and through the stadium area, where spectators and coaches could view the race by walking between two points along a single corridor. The races started at 5pm and 6:15, were mass-start format, and covered nearly entirely different loops for the classic and...

In the mens’ race Chris Cook and Torin Koos skied to a dominating finish in the men’s final, which held a pack of 10 skiers nearly through...

Strandberg and Southam Win US Nationals 5/10km Classic

Fairbanks, Alaska – James Southam (APUNSC/Atomic) and Kristina Strandberg (Saab Salomon Factory Team) won the rescheduled 5/10km US Nationals classic race yesterday.  This race was originally scheduled for January in Anchorage, but was canceled due to cold temperatures. Weather was not a problem in Fairbanks with sunny skies and temperatures in the teens.  However, the recent explosion of Mt. Redoubt prevented some skiers from reaching Fairbanks in time for the race, including Canadian World Cup...
