Fischer Reflects on US Nationals

At the recently completed 2009 US Cross Country National Championships in Anchorage, Alaska, Fischer skiers won 3 out of the 4 races held during the bitterly cold week.  Originally scheduled for 8 races, cold temperatures below the FIS minimum standard forced the cancellation of the Men’s and Women’s distance classic race and the Men’s and Women’s team sprint competition. On Monday, January 5th, both the Women’s 5km freestyle and the Men’s 10km freestyle races were...

Last week’s US National Championships were marked by the cancellation of two events and seemingly endless postponements. With temperatures barely reaching the legal limit for racing, it was all organizers could do to pull off one distance race and one sprint. This has led to discussion as to what, if anything, should be done to avoid similar situations. Proposals include moving the entire Championship to the spring, avoiding venues susceptible to such frigid weather, and...

Note:  Matt was left off the published list of skiers scheduled to compete at the Vancouver World Cups.  Matt...

Nationals: A Cold Day Brings Out True Sports

Competition ended with the long-awaited classic sprint at the US National Cross Country Skiing Championships Thursday. The colder temperatures finally gave way to warmer weather, but while the wind picked up and made the stadium a tough place to be. Spectators kept warm by wearing face masks and running laps along the course while volunteers double-wrapped competitors right up until they approached the start line for the gun. Nordic skiing really is like no other...

In a non-violent demonstration against the cancellation of yet another race at US Nationals due to cold temperatures, on Wednesday a contingent of racers from California and a lone racer from Aspen, CO, skied the immaculately groomed 1.5km sprint course in approximately -10 degrees F wearing nothing but hats, gloves, and wind briefs. And in some cases sports bras… [google]-1171739721493547522[/google]

Anchorage, Alaska – Today marks the last chance for the US National Championships. Enjoy Are you tired of...

With the temperature on course hovering near or below the -4F cutoff, today’s classic distance race at Kincaid Park has been canceled. The jury held out as long as possible to make a race happen, but concluded that they could never ensure that the course would be warm enough for the duration of the event. The course had already been condensed to use yesterday’s 5 and 10K, allowing for a shorter event. A call had...
