This past weekend, nearly the entirety of the adult population of Midwestern skiers made their way to Hayward for the annual get-together of the ski community: The Birkie. The American Birkebeiner (or Birkie, for short), is the biggest ski race in North America. For many skiers, the race represents their culmination of training for the whole year. Just over two weeks ago, the sale of Telemark Resort to the highest bidder -- somewhat of an unknown entity in the Colorado-based Newco, LLC. -- left local stakeholders wary. Would they reopen the historic resort? And what would become of the start of the American Birkebeiner?
Registration for the 2014 Swix American Birkebeiner officially closed Tuesday at 2:00 pm (CST) as the Birkebeiner 50/54K and Kortelopet 23K events reached a combined total of 10,000 skiers and an historic new race cap. Another first, this is again the earliest in the 41-year history of the American Birkebeiner that registration for the Birkie and Korte has closed.
With the number of entrants nearly maxed out, registration for the 2014 American Birkebeiner and Kortelopet ends Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. Central time.
