Toko: Birkie Report and What’s New for 2013

Birkie Report You gotta give credit where credit is due: awesome job weather forecasters!  The forecast (National Weather Service) stayed the same for the entire week before the Birkie and ended up being pretty much spot on! Our glide recommendation was a slam dunk the entire week.  Even if it hadn’t snowed race morning and been warmer the excellent dirt resistance would have made it excellent then too.   For kick, we got more snow...

The forecast has been stable for the last 5 days: warm up until Friday evening, then 12f overnight and a high of 26f on Saturday.  I am always wary of forecasts where conditions are supposed to change the night before the event as so often the change is delayed or doesn’t happen.   Glide: Were the Birkie today, we would have been on LF Moly, HF Moly, JetStream Red with Red structure.  The tip for...

Toko: Prelim Birkie Wax Tip and Why We Race

Click here for Preliminary Tip John Bauer went out and tested glide wax this morning. Temperature was fairly warm when he tested (20F) which is on the warm side to what we anticipate, so it was a good test. HF Blue outran HF Red and JS Blue outran JS Red. The Birkie trail has lots of ice on it with some slow powder as well and some dirt on road crossings and areas that have...

There are a few different methods for applying Toko JetStream, here is an overview. Rotocorking JetStream  Ironing JetStream Additionally there are many who prefer to hand cork JetStream.  If I am going to hand cork JetStream, it would be in new falling snow and over a rotocork job.  I find that the little JetStream residue on the ski base is super fast in new falling (or newly fallen) snow.  To hand cork JetStream, rub the...

Toko: Field Reports US Nationals and Mid A Wins

Field Report from Alaska Winter Stars For the 30k Classic Mass Start, we waxed David Norris with LF Moly then HF Red, then JetStream Red with some XCold Powder mixed in.  For his kick, we started with Base Green binder and then covered it with layers of the new Nordic Grip Red.  His skis were good and he ended up 2nd behind Noah Hoffman. Jan Buron, Head Coach, Alaska Winter Stars Field Report from the...

Toko ran a Facebook promotion where the public was asked the question “Which division’s JO team has the most fun?” The winning team was to receive $2000 worth of Toko waxes and tools.  The promotion ended 12 January and Mid Atlantic took the win with 1034 votes.  New England was second with 896 and Alaska a distant third with 373.  Congratulations to Mid Atlantic!

Toko: 2012 US Nationals Classic Sprint Report

Tested and picked glide waxes yesterday as was the plan as I anticipated that today’s kick solution could be a demanding one.  It did some freezing raining last night before they groomed.  Still, the tracks got an ice glaze on them which made things a bit tricky this morning.  We tested kick waxes, straight base green, straight klisters, and klisters covered.  Before qualifying, our best wax was Nordic Green Klister covered by Nordic Red...

Toko: 2012 US Nationals 20/30k Classic Report

OK, so the plan was to have old manmade snow today and to go with Base Green and then alternating layers of Base Green and Carbon Grip Mint. So it snowed of course. By the time the women’s race got going, there was maybe 2 inches and it kept snowing until the men were almost done. So, since using lots of Base Green works better for older snow, we tested and ended up predictably on...

Toko: 2012 US Nationals 10.15k Skate Report Nordic

Yesterday we tested a whole lot.  It was really cold (below 0f overnight) and it stayed pretty cold during the day.  The course received a whole lot of freshly shot and freshly distributed manmade.  This was mixed in with old snow, but was still pretty dominant on the distance part of the loop.  Freshly shot manmade is slower than manmade snow that has been around for a while.  The best wax that I know of...

Toko: 2012 US Nationals Skate Sprint

We tested continuously today so we’d learn as much as we can and could pass on as much info as we could to teams.  Looks like it paid off!!  We tested top coats (fluorocarbon overlays such as JetStream and Helx) 3 times.  All 3 times, a mix of JetStream Blue/Red won the test just in front of straight JetStream Blue.  Third every time was JetStream Red (then Yellow, then JetStream Red covered by Helx Red). ...

Toko: Applying a HF Blue/XCold Mix

Applying an HF Blue/XCold Mix XCold Powder has earned its way to being one of the absolute most popular waxes on the racing circuit.  Its main purpose is to make the skis slide faster when the snow is cold and slow.  If conditions are cold and fast, leave it out.  The video below demonstrates how to mix HF Blue and XCold Powder, a very common and successful combination. Transition to First Snow and Classic Technique...
