2010 March

Northern Maine is unique place, and after spending a few years here with the Maine Winter Sports Center, it is also a place that I am very fond of. I just came across an article by Bill McKibben about the impact of nordic skiing and biathlon on Maine's...

The end of the World Cup season means many things for me. It means the snow conditions are degrading to a point where skiing becomes “spring skiing” involving shorts and sun-tan lotion. The bike comes out of the garage and the soccer/football cleats come out for another great summer of kicking a ball around. For [...]

Fort Kent and Madawaska may not be the most scintillating of towns, but there are, in fact, a handful of things to do aside from eat potatoes and chase moose around. We talked to a couple of locals to get the skinny on Fort Kent and Madawaska. Here are some suggestions. Fort Kent In terms of restaurants, there’s pretty much one game in town for dinner, and that’s The Swamp Buck, on Main Street. Nothing...

Babikov, Randall Headline U.S. 30/50 K Champs. In Fort Kent

Ivan Babikov (CAN) has traveled more than 10,000 kilometers since the conclusion of the 2010 Winter Olympics in late February. He only has to go 50 more on Wednesday, but they’ll feel every bit as long and painful as his circuitous journey from Vancouver to Fort Kent, Maine. Babikov is the clear favorite for tomorrow’s U.S. freestyle 30/50 k championships, but racing just 72 hours removed from the World Cup Finals in Sweden, he’ll be...

We’ve been in Fort Kent since arriving on Saturday.  Finally got hooked up to the internet and are getting settled back into college, I mean, ski life.  The crew is gearing up for the 50km skate tomorrow morning.  It has been beautiful since we arrived with hard-packed trails and fast conditions.  The biathlon National Championships [...]

Records Set at Equinox Ski Challenge

Sunny skies, mild temperatures and a fast course contributed to several new event records and countless personal records being set by the 89 participants of the 4th Annual Equinox Ski Challenge.  Participants in this years event contributed to the festive, relaxed season finale, celebrating spring skiing alongside some incredible efforts by those who come to test their mettle.  The event also collected 217 pounds of food for the West Yellowstone Food Bank and raised $700...

Juergen Uhl (South Burlington, VT) and Audrey Weber (St. Louis Park, MN) may have graduated from college last spring, but they haven’t left their racing days behind.  The UVM and Dartmouth ’09s captured the 54K Birkie Classic titles in February this year and will make their way to Maine to race at Spring Series this week.  FasterSkier caught up with Juergen and Audrey on winning the Birkie Classic and life after EISA racing. Juergen Uhl...

The most prestigious end of the year awards go to the overall World Cup Champions – the top man and woman receive a large crystal globe and a boatload of cash. Petter Northug (NOR) and Justyna Kowalczyk (POL) wrapped up the overall titles some time ago. Kowalczyk accrued an impressive 2064 total World Cup points in 2010.  She scored points in every race she entered, and missed just two events the entire season, the freestyle...

pRemember those guys that came out of the interwebs wood work during the Olympics calling the US Ski Team a bunch of idiots, US skiers pathetic and JohnnyKlister.com elitist?  (a href="http://www.johnnyklister.com/post/125832273/the-johnny5-fasterskier-com-topher-sabot-matt"Duh- been saying that for years/a.)  I’m guessing these are the same guys that watch World Cup footage and talk about how a href="http://skierpost.com/index.php?/20100228668/News/northug-is-the-king-of-skiing.html"badly Northug skis/a.  So where are the idiots spitting a href="http://fasterskier.com/2010/02/freeman-ends-olympics-with-dnf-southam-posts-top-us-mens-result/"vitriol/a and just in general being a href="http://www.facebook.com/#!/jgklok?ref=searchsid=627995459.2171851480..1"Cloxxi/a now that the end of the season has a bit of success to it?  It seems they’ve a href="http://www.bestweekever.tv/bwe/images/2009/05/DOG-HELMET-BEER-OLDEST-DOG.jpg"choked down/a their poo poo attitude faster than Marolt at the Wasatch Brew Pub. (Too soon?)  A huge thank you to Andy Newell Kikkan Randall for throwing down the final races of the year in style and to the rest of the community from their elite teammates to the volunteers at the road crossings for keeping the sport on the right path. /p

Saturday: 50F and Sunny, Sunday: 6″ fresh snow Sunday couldn’t have been more different than Saturday.  It snowed really hard most of the morning and the groomers were running laps all the way up to the start of the race. Handicap start meant that racers started based on there finishes in the prior 3 races.  My handicap [...]

After Saturday’s race I talked to a photographer, who I believe is Leif Lillandt. I was kind of upset and a bit out of it at the time. He sent me a link to these photos from his picasa site. He has some great photos from the race. Check them out at http://picasaweb.google.se/Leif.Lillandt/FISWCFinal2010FalunMarch20th#5451237728880957698

There’s nothing like a good road trip to kick off spring. No tickets to book, nor schedule to keep. Just pull off the road when you’re ready to sleep. The sun shines bright and the pavement is dry, there’s so much to see when you opt not to fly. Go find some good friends to help split the drive, and keep [...]

Madawaska, ME—Eight U.S. Olympians, four Canadian Olympians, U.S. Ski Team athletes, U.S. Biathlon Team athletes, at least four NCAA Champions and multiple Junior National Champions will all make their way to the starting line of the 2010 U.S. SuperTour Finals this week.  With excellent late season conditions on all three courses, and a forecast for continued cold weather, the skiing is fast and fantastic. Headliners Ivan Babikov, Kikkan Randall, James Southam, Caitlin Compton, Holly Brooks,...
