2004 April

This spring, instead of concluding the ski season in the traditional klister, slush, and ‘I’d rather be running’ mentality, the Green Mountain Valley School’s Nordic Team headed across the Atlantic for a change of scenery to test the tracks in northern Italy’s Alps. For nineteen days the team toured Südtirol, training and racing at six beautiful mountain venues. Graciously supported by GMVS’ sister school Sportoberschule, seven athletes and coach Jon Arne Enevoldsen set up base...

Team shows a focus on the best and youngest towards the three upcoming championship years. The 2004-2005 Norwegian national teams were just announced. It represents according to the national team staff a natural focus towards the three upcoming championship seasons. The first big championship is next years Oberstdorf Worlds in February. Then it’s the 2006 Olympics in Italy. “We need to increase the focus and recourses to involve fewer skiers,” says chief of sport Hakensmoen....

Norwegian newspaper VG reports: The cross country sprint racers have long ago captured Düsseldorf, Stockholm and Drammen. They are moving into Prague, Bern and Goteborg as well this winter. Norway’s dominating sprint-queen Marit Bjorgen is getting a chance to capture (the hearts of) more of Europe’s big cities. Former Olympic champion and member of the FIS cross country committee, Vegard Ulvang (Norway) is skeptical to this development. “These are interesting projects but I have some...

Ah yes, spring in the Midwest; glorious days filled with high winds, cloudy skies and rain on a fairly consistent basis, not to mention, temperatures ranging from 30 — 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Waiting for the onslaught of hot, humid summer days, spring here in the Chicago suburbs is a great time to do a little cross-training and relax.   Sipping coffee on the day after Easter I read Torbjorn’s account of how he spent his...

Lahti is a party town. This town goes out at midnight every day of the week. There is shouting and revelry on the snowy streets at 4am. There is bar after bar on every block, and they are inevitably full, and loud and smoky. Can it be like this all the time, or is it only for the World Cup weekend and other big events? Something tells me in Lahti it is all the time....

Today, as the FasterSkier.com staff was browsing the internet looking for the latest in cross-country ski news, we came across a poll on ESPN.com asking the question “Who Is The World's Greatest Athlete?” They gave a list of 64 athletes in an elimination bracket, and asked their readers to vote for the best athlete in each match-up. The eventual winner will be crowned 'World's Greatest Athlete.' We browsed through the names – full of football...

Thomas Alsgaard was recently hired as new technique coach for the Norwegian team. His job is first of all to advice members of the men’s team regarding technique. – This will be exciting. We know Thomas well and he is recourse with a definite strength for the technical aspects of racing. He has a good feel for technique and should be able to ski behind us and give us pointers, says National team member Frode...

Following in the footsteps of the Canadian women's ski team, and many other sports teams… A marketing firm recently did a “in the buff” photo session with the members of the Norwegian sprint team. Langrenn.com “got a storm of requests” to present the photos. Here they are……. HAVARD BJERKELI ELDAR RONNING KRISTIAN HORNTVEDT TOR ARNE HETLAND TROND IVERSEN OG TROND EINAR ELDEN

I am only 23 years old but I have spent a majority of my life involved with the US Ski Team. From the time I won my first Junior National Championship at 15, they have been involved in my development. The ski team has had its problems. The most obvious problem was the attitude that the US would never compete internationally. This stance was exacerbated by the Ski Team’s tiny budget, a slew of under...

Over the past fifteen years I have raced and trained on cross-country ski trails all over North America. From Fort Kent, Maine to Fairbanks, Alaska, I feel I have skied a sizeable chunk of what the U.S. and Canada have to offer. With the 2003-2004 ski season now behind me I decided to come up with a list of my all-time favorite ski trails. Some of these trails are racing trails, others are touring trails,...

This is my first-hand account of sprint-racing against some of the fastest skiers in the world. The race I describe herein was the final Swedish Cup (similar to our Nor/Am SuperTour) sprint of the season, held in Ostersund, Sweden — on the home trails of Anders Soedergren and the Fredriksson brothers. After World Cup sprints, Norwegian Nationals, and Swedish Nationals, this field is likely the most competitive in the world. I started my day with...

The Top Ten Signs of Spring in Northern New England Compared to many other sports, cross-country skiing requires considerable attention to the weather and a general sensitivity to changes in the seasons. For example, knowing when winter is over can be crucially important. This awareness allows you to: Add “structure” to your race skis with a few last-minute “spring denial” workouts on dirty, wet, melting trails with several pieces of snow showing through the rocks;...

Just the train from Milan up to Germany was a ten-hour ride. But the views were excellent. The big Italian valleys are patterned with row after row of grape vines some thin as a finger others thick as trees. The air is heavy, a near permanent haze that is humid and sticky and which lays a misty veil over everything. Italy is old and new, run down and newly painted. A hotel room can lack...
