After a week of back-to-back, high-stakes racing, the 2013 Junior and U23 World Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic are finished and teams have all scattered back home to get ready for the next race. The North Americans had a lot to say about Liberec, renewed motivations and their takeaways from the experience that didn't make our original race reports; here are the leftover notes from throughout the week.

Led By Ransom’s 15th, Five Canadian Women Improve in Youth and Junior Pursuits

While Julia Ransom collected her second top-20 result in as many days, four other Canadian women improved in the youth and junior pursuits in Obertilliach, Austria. The lone American woman to make the pursuits, Anna Kubek moved up to 25th in the youth women's race.

Gow, Harden Notch Their Second Top-20’s of the Weekend; Casey Smith’s Flawless Shooting Gains 20 Places in Junior Pursuit

Christian Gow and Stuart Harden continued solid Championships racing that was nonetheless not quite what they were hoping for, finishing 16th and 18th in the junior and youth pursuits. For America, Casey Smith turned in one of the more impressive pursuit performances of the day, missing a single shot and climbing 20 places to 23rd.

Americans Notch 10th, 12th in Junior Worlds Relays

On the very last day of Junior World Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic, the U.S. women's and men's relays placed 10th and 12th, respectively. A fall in the men's relay tripped up a stellar early scramble by Logan Hanneman, while Ben Saxton and Heather Mooney each skied high-ranking splits for the Americans.

It would’ve been so easy to dwell on the numbers, results and superficial measures of success. But racing is about so much more than that. Canada’s juniors, particularly its women, understood that. They worked hard and finished 13th, and the Canadian men took 15th.

After dropping from second to fourth with two penalties in the very first stage, Sean Doherty calmly did as he had trained, knocked down his targets, and skied to a 30-second victory that left him enough time to celebrate his first World Championship by carrying an American flag across the line.

Russian Men End Junior Worlds on Ultimate High; Swedish Women Squeak by for Relay Win

Led by two-time individual champion Dmitry Rostovtsev, Russia racked up another victory in the men's relay on Sunday, the last day of Junior Worlds. In the women's relay, Sweden's Stina Nilsson used her sprinting ability to charge late and oust Russia's Nadezhda Shuniaeva .

Bjornsen Finishes U23s on a High Note, Takes 16th in 30k Skiathlon

Erik Bjornsen nabbed his third top-20 of the week on Saturday with a 16th-place finish in the 30 k skiathlon at U23 World Championships. Caitlin Patterson led three American women in the top-30 by taking 19th in the women's 15 k.

Skiathlons Prove a Frustrating Finish for Canadian Team at U23s

Annika Hicks led the Canadian team at U23's with a 32nd-place finish in the 15 k skiathlon; Patrick Stewart-Jones was the best of the men, finishing 47th. After a tough week that included illness for some team members, Andy Shields and Colin Abbott were lapped and unable to finish the men's 30k.

Two Top-20s for Canada in Biathlon World Junior Sprints; Gow, Ransom Strong in Junior Debuts

Laura Dahlmeier of Germany and Alexandr Loginov of Russia picked up their first World Championships titles, while Christian Gow and Julia Ransom of Canada made the jump from youth to junior racing by placing 14th and 16th in the 7.5/10 k sprints. Casey Smith was the top American, placing 43rd.

Ustiugov and Haga Repeat Titles in Skiathlon at U23 Worlds

In the last race of the U23 World Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic, the skiathlon gold medals went to two individuals who have already been dominant this week. Sergey Ustiugov (RUS) continued his winning streak in the men’s 30 k event and Ragnhild Haga (NOR) took home the title in the women's 15 k.

Doherty Races to Silver in Biathlon Youth Worlds Opener

Sean Doherty achieved a personal best and made U.S. history on Friday, placing second in the 7.5 k sprint opener at the IBU Youth/Junior World Championships in Obertilliach, Austria. Just 3.6 seconds out of first, Doherty was still soaking up the result.

Couturier Notches 17th in World Juniors Skiathlon

On the final individual race of the Junior World Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic, Raphaël Couturier (CNEPH) finally grabbed the spotlight away from the Canadian women. He finished the 20 k skiathlon in 49:25.0 for 17th place in a race where Russia owned the podium, lead by Dmitriy Rostovtsev in 47:40.2. For the second time this week Heather Mooney led the U.S. contingent at World Junior Championships. She finished 26th in the 10 k skiathlon, another personal best for her in the discipline. Kyle Bratrud was 34th in the men's 20 k to lead the American men.

Stadlober Takes Gold, Russian Men Monopolize Junior Skiathlon Podium

Dmitry Rostovtsev led a Russian sweep of the podium in the junior mens 20 k skiathlon in Liberec, Czech Republic, on Friday. The lone non-Russian to break through to the medals was the women's winner, Teresa Stadlober of Austria, who held a charging Nadezhda Shuniaeva at bay for the victory.

Patterson, Bjornsen Lead U.S. with Top 15s in U23 Freestyle Races

The Russian men put on another demonstration of their astonishing strength and depth in Liberec, Czech Republic, on Thursday in the men’s 15 k freestyle individual start. Junior World Championships continued in Liberec, Czech Republic, on Wednesday. Forrest Mahlen and Sawyer Kesselheim put up another pair of top-30s for the U.S. in the men’s 10 k freestyle, placing 27th and 29th, respectively. Mary O’Connell led the way for the American women with 33rd in the 5 k.
