Germany's Victoria Carl notched her second straight medal at Junior World Championships on Wednesday, winning gold in the 5 k skate event. Dmitry Rostovtsev of Russia won the men's 10 k ahead of teammate Artem Maltsev.

Sophie Caldwell and Erik Bjornsen posted personal bests in the classic sprint at U23 World Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic. The Americans each made it as far as the semifinals; Caldwell finished ninth and Bjornsen was 10th.
The best U23 skiers in the world are often the best of any age category, and this year's field at U23 World Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic, was as strong as ever. Federico Pellegrino (ITA) and Elena Soboleva (RUS) won the U23 classic sprint on Tuesday, each in photo finishes.
The Americans at Junior World Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic, this week started things off with a bang in the classic sprint on Monday, qualifying four athletes for the heats. Ben Saxton and Logan Hanneman led the way in 14th and 16th, respectively. Heather Mooney was 19th and Corey Stock 24th.
Rookie Stewart-Jones Leads Canadians in 25th at Junior Worlds Classic Sprint

Nakkertok's Katherine Stewart-Jones led the Canadians on Day 1 of the Junior World Championships, placing 25th in the classic sprint. Excited with her result, she was one of two Canadians to qualify for the heats; Alexis Turgeon (CNEPH) made it through in 30th.
Canada will be sending a full team of 16 young athletes to the World Youth and Junior Championships, to be held in Obertilliach, Austria, starting January 25th.

Sean Doherty (Vermont Collegiate Biathlon) and Anna Kubek (Mount Itasca) dominated their fields so thoroughly that it was tough for anyone else to come close enough tot qualify automatically, thanks to USBA's percent-back system. But with a little discretion, ten young biathletes are bound for Obertilliach, Austria, later this month.

Domestic racing was on hold because of holidays and the looming U.S. Nationals, but the Tour de Ski kicked off in Germany, which also hosted a strange and exciting team biathlon event in a soccer stadium. American junior biathletes also vied for spots at World Youth and Junior Championships.
In Bozeman earlier this season, bibs had to be redistributed for SuperTour sprint heats once starters were already on lining up. More recently and catastrophically in Craftsbury, an Eastern Cup had to cancel its sprint heats and hold a second qualifier after cascading hardware failures wreaked havoc on results. Here's why we can't expect these problems to go away.
