After Report, Ban on Russian Athletes Considered; World Cups May Be Moved

Martin Fourcade, the most successful biathlete of the last several years, resorted to Twitter to ask his international federation about the ten positive tests by Russian athletes allegedly hidden by the Russian Ministry of Sport. He didn't get a response. Meanwhile, the IOC moved forward with re-testing anti-doping samples from all Russian athletes at the 2014 Olympics, and also called for any major events scheduled to be held in Russia to be moved.

Four-Year Ban For Wurm, Who Admits Doping; Used Cobalt to Boost Performance

Austrian skier and former U23 World Champion Harald Wurm has been suspended from competition for four years, effectively ending the 31-year-old's career. He seems to have been using cobalt, which is highly effective at promoting the production of red blood cells when it is inhaled (much like xenon or argon).

After placing third in Wednesday's skiathlon, Finland's Matti Heikkinen claimed his first victory since 2011 on Friday in the men's 15 k skate. Canada once again had four in the top 30, with Alex Harvey leading the team in fourth. “I think it’s one of the best races of my life here," Harvey said of Canmore. Noah Hoffman led the U.S. in 23rd.

Friday's 10 k freestyle was a good day for Norway's Ingvild Flugstad Østberg. She skied away for the win, stymied by neither the grueling course or the who's who of Norwegian stars she left in her wake. Jessie Diggins put her hold on fifth, leading four U.S. women in the top 22.

Friday's Stage 7 15 k freestyle skate tightened up the standings for the overall in the Ski Tour Canada. Russia's Sergey Ustiugov leads, but by only 32 seconds ahead of Norway's Petter Northug Jr. If that wasn't reason enough for Ustiugov to keep a high octane pace on Stage 8, Northug's teammate, Martin Johnsrud Sundby starts 39 seconds back from the Russian. These photos capture the action on a beautiful day in Canmore and a decisive day for the men.
