Well, running this spring couldn’t have been much better. I trained smart, I was feeling fast and had a handful of satisfying results. Then, as most of you already know, I tore up my knee, with the help of my loving mutt, Montana.  It has been a really long road back, mentally and physically,  even [...]

Rollerskiing and Technique

In Andy Newell’s video update from the USST Bend camp, there was one thing stuck out as he recapped everything that they had been doing. The one thing that was more prevalent than anything else in the video was technique. In every clip a skier was doing a different work out, but Andy always mentioned their technique and what they were working on whether it was weight transfer, leg drive or any of the million...

How Green Can a Ski Team Be?

Professional cross country skiers are not usually preoccupied with environmental concerns like invasive aquatic species, composting, or even remembering to turn off the lights in their houses. Nor do they spend a whole lot of time doing trail work. Instead, for the most part, skiers tend to take for granted the negative environmental impact of their sport, with elite competitors criss-crossing the country for races, fleets of groomers guzzling gas, and the voracious appetites of...

I am always talking about how sweet the mountains are here compared to the East and the athletes are always telling me to get over it but I think everyone could agree that the mountains were great for training in over the last week.

Running 101 (for Schralpers)

Believe it or not, there are people out there are just starting to get into athletics for the first time in their lives. Some of them still find ski equipment intimidating, and fields of snow cold and loney. They stand by bewildered and call us "schralpers," "nodiks," and "stick twitchers." They don't get the inside jokes on johnnyklister.com and think Team Today has something to do with Lymphoma and purple t-shirts.

Nick Mancuso, Camp organizer, had a goal of offering an opportunity for High School juniors to train together, and receive an overview on training and technique for Nordic skiing. In addition to the ski components,...

Distance Roller-Skiing

Every spring, after all the snow has melted and the skis have been put away, each skier must answer the same daunting question: When to start roller skiing and how to go about it for the year? One of the biggest issues with roller skis for most skiers and especially people that are new to the sport is finding the right roller ski to use.  For many people this issue is easily solved, as they...
