Garrott Kuzzy

After a lot of hard work this spring, summer, and fall, the racing season is finally here. . . We’ll be racing a 1.5km classic sprint tomorrow morning at 9am.  There are 400 men and women on the start list, starting at 15 sec intervals.  No heats, just one blazing fast qualifier.  Hit it!

Every year in West Yellowstone, Salomon sponsored athletes lead a clinic called “Ski with the Best.”  This year, we got to ski with the Duluth East Ski Team, one of the best high school teams in Minnesota, as well as a number of other master skiers in town for the  Ski Festival.  Since there’s no [...]

The ski trails in West are Packed.  I’m curious how many skiers are in West Yellowstone for the Ski Festival.  Not sure how many there actually are, but I’m pretty sure they were all at the trail head at 9:00 this morning. Tomorrow, the CXC Team Vertical Limit and Salomon will be hosting a ski clinic [...]

I can’t remember ever traveling with a team this big.  Our junior team rolled into West Yellowstone last night and the masters team members have been trickling in over the past two days.  In total, we’ve got 12 CXC Team Vertical Limit athletes, 15 CXC Junior Team athletes, 20 CXC masters team athletes, and 7 [...]

Today is the only day that it is illegal to shoot a firearm in the state of Wisconsin.  That can only mean one thing: tomorrow is the first day of deer season.  Students in the Hayward School District will have the entire week of Thanksgiving off of school, just to deer hunt. Enjoy a little deer [...]

Cross Training for Nordic Skiing

www.cxcacademy.com for more strength training ideas. It is important to remember the value of cross training in order to keep skiing enjoyable. I like to mix up my training, especially on low volume weeks, so that I’m not just “skiing easy.” Mix it up, try new activities, and remember that almost anything active can be considered cross training for Nordic skiing.

I’ve been on my own or with other teammates for the past few weeks.  As of this morning, the whole CXC crew was back together and ripping around the Rendezvous Trails.  It was a surprisingly typical day in West, getting woken up at 4:30am by the elk hunters next door (they came home this afternoon [...]

Silver Star is a 14 hour drive from West Yellowstone.  By Tuesday morning, it was time to leave my home away from home for the first half of November.  We got out for a short ski in the morning then packed up the  car for a road trip.    The weather could not have been [...]

Not sure if this is legit.  If there already is one or this is illegal, let me know. . . There are hundreds of skiers heading to West Yellowstone in the next week, but no way to coordinate rides.  If you’re looking for a ride or have an extra seat to or from West, feel free [...]

Great weekend in Silver Star. Photo: Roberto Carcelean Finished up the week watching an awesome Packer game this afternoon, followed by an evening ski. If you’re looking for more reading, you can check out this interview I did for fasterskier.com last week.

The Road to Whistler: Garrott Kuzzy

A Midwest native and avid mountain biker, Garrott Kuzzy is as passionate about the outdoors as he is about nordic training and racing. Starting as a ski jumper and nordic combined athlete, his love of the cross country aspect of the sport won over. Early on he was exposed to the real world of nordic by his dad, Jim, who was a Worldloppet Master and took his young son first to watch and later to...

Leif Nordgren is a biathlete on the US National team from Marine on St. Croix, Minnesota.  He flew in yesterday and will be staying with us in Silver Star for the rest of the week.  I caught up with him while watching the French Masters Tennis Tournament on TV this afternoon. 1. Leif is a pretty [...]

Heading into my second week out here in Silver Star.  Marshall, Brayton, & Sam took off this morning, while Leif Zimmermann and Kristina Trygstad from the Bridger Ski Foundation in Bozeman, Montana moved in.  Nice ski this morning, then we went down into Vernon to pick up groceries–my first trip off the mountain in a [...]

Today was a relaxing rest day on the mountain.  Mostly catching up on business that’s been put off in favor of skiing this week.  Brayton and Marshall made the cut for this week’s Silver Star Nordic Update.  I got out for a light jog before sunset and took a couple shots around town.  The building [...]

If you’ve ever seen the film Thank You for Smoking, you’ll know the Mod Squad stands for the “Merchants of Death.”  If not, this short trailer will get you up to speed. . . In the Nordic World, the Mod Squad is the hot new team on the scene.  The Methow Olympic Development Project is comprised [...]
