– It’s tough to find excuses when I end up second, she says Bjorgen talked about the tough pressure she feels in a recent VG newspaper: – In reality I’m satisfied. I want to be best all the time, but have to realize that I can’t be number one every time, says Bjorgen. With so much hype over the Yellowstone “Skiapalooza” Thanksgiving Camp, I figured a story about one of the “other” Thanksgiving camps might be of interest. Since I'm not really among the nation's elite level of Nordic skiers, I just couldn't justify making a long trip from my home in Los Alamos, NM, all the way up to West Yellowstone. It may only be two states away, but that is some serious geography (and in this...

After spending last week at the Canadian Nor Am races in Canmore, they came south and swept the top six places in the men's...

When you first started working with XC skiers two years ago, what did you see they could best get out of strength training. That’s a good question. I don’t know. I’m still working on that. I couldn’t then, nor can I now pinpoint any specifics. Early on, it’s important to build rapport and trust in one another. The way I approach strength with skiing is that in the whole scheme of things, strength is a...

Sunday was another chilly day at the BSF SuperTour races in Bozeman, MT. The event was a classical team-sprint with semifinals in the morning, and finals just after noon. Morning temperatures in the low-teens made for relatively easy wax conditions, however the situation became more and more complex as the day wore on and the temperatures rose into the mid-20’s. Again, the course was firm and fast. Meeting expectations after they both achieved podium-positions yesterday,...

Ostersund, Sweden, December 3. Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, NY) chalked up another personal best today with a 19th place finish in the Men’s 12.5K Pursuit competition on the closing day of the Ostersund Biathlon World Cup. Three competitions here resulted in three personal bests for Burke. He began with 30th in the 20K Individual, came back with 22nd place in yesterday’s 10K Sprint, followed by the 19th place today. These results did not surprise Burke....

It came as no surprise that CXC teammates Laura Valaas and Caitlin Compton were the dominant team in today's SuperTour sprint relay in Bozeman, Montana. After all, the two of them have divvied up all of the SuperTour wins so far this season. Valaas has won the two individual sprints, and Compton won the lone distance race while also making the podium in both sprints. They ran away with today's relay, which consisted of each...

Cold temperatures, sunny skies, and hard-packed, machine-made snow made for fast racing in Bozeman on Saturday. Athletes competed in an individual sprint over rolling terrain on a course of 1,200 meters. The speed of the snow, coupled with a technical course made for a lot of races that weren’t decided until the final 100 meters. Winners on the day were Laura Valaas [CXC/Salomon], coming off a victory in last week’s sprint race in West Yellowstone,...
