While registration for the 2012 American Birkebeiner and Kortelopet met its maximum in late November with 9,000 entries, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Wisconsin Chapter has teamed up with race organizers to auction of 20 more spots.
These entries will be auctioned off starting Wednesday to raise money for MS research. All proceeds benefit the National MS Society as part of the Birkie’s Skiers for Cures Program.
From the American Birkebeiner website:

Ends at 4:30 pm (CST) on Wednesday, December 21
HOW: Email your bids to (email address will be posted here at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday morning) who will assign an ID number to each bidder.
MAXIMUM ID NUMBERS PER BIDDER: Each bidder can request up to two bid ID numbers. If you are a winning bid, you then purchase an entry for each of your bid ID numbers at that winning bid amount. All twenty top Bid ID numbers and bid amounts will be posted online. See “Tracking Your Bid,” below.
MINIMUM BID: $150 per entry. Bids will increase by $10 increments
TRACKING YOUR BID: Each bidder ID # and bid amount will be posted on the National MS Society-Wisconsin Chapter Facebook Page. Bids will be updated on this page at least four times daily: 10 a.m., Noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. CST. The list will show the Top 20 bids.
WINNING BIDS: The Wisconsin MS Chapter will notify winners by e-mail on 12/22/11. Online payment is required at that time. MS will then send the winners their Birkie or Kortelopet Registration Forms. Winners must then complete and return these forms to the American Birkebeiner office.
WAVE PLACEMENT: Please note that waves 1 through 5, skate and classic, are currently closed. If you are planning on doing a qualifying race to improve your wave placement for the 2012 Birkie or Korte, please note that the highest wave you can now qualify for is Wave 6.
* Because this auction is a fundraiser for MS, any amount over the $125 value of a Birkie or Korte entry is tax deductible.
** Birkie entries acquired through the auction may not be sold to a third party. The winning bidder must use the entry/ies or specify that it is being gifted to a family member or friend.
