The last few weeks here in Craftsbury have been wintery and awesome. We got lots of snow, and pretty much every day has been filled with perfect wintery activities, like going for really long skis on grand tour, skiing to lunch, skiing to dinner, skiing in blizzards, skiing in the moonlight, skiing in the sun, [...]

Adam St.Pierre, M.S. is the head coach of the Boulder Nordic Junior Racing Team and an exercise physiologist with the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine. As we approach the heart of the XC ski racing season, it is important that athletes adjust their training to get into peak form for the year’s big races, whether they be World Championships, SuperTours, or local events. Peaking is what endurance athletes try to do just before their most...

Lake Placid SuperTour Classic – A Picture’s Worth…

Just over a week ago, FasterSkier traveled to Lake Placid for two days of SuperTour action. The events doubled as an EISA college carnival. Saturday featured a 6/10km classic individual start race held at the Lake Placid Jumping Complex. A midweek storm earlier in the week dumped plenty of snow on the trails at the planned venue – the Olympic trails of Mt. Van Hovenberg. But organizers chose to keep the races at the foot...

CHAUX-NEUVE, France (Jan. 23) – Olympic silver medalist Todd Lodwick (Steamboat Springs, CO) jumped third and hung on in a hotly contested battle to finish eighth in a nordic combined World Cup in Chaux-Neuve in the Jura mountains near Geneva. All four U.S. skiers finished in the top-30 points as France’s Jason Lamy-Chappuis wrapped up the World Cup title with a dominating win. While the podium still eluded the USA, it was another steppingstone event...

Luckily they were still good enough to get me to u23s, but starting out the week racing sick just isn’t the way to have a good race series. I haven’t ever felt so crappy the day after a race: my whole body felt like a headache in every muscle. It was very weird. However, I had managed to get a 4th place for U23s in that first classic sprint so it still may have been the right decision. It definitely took its toll on the 10k classic two days later though. That should have been a good course for me, and APU girls were kicking butt. My body had different ideas, and while the result ended up being the same for u23s, every downhill turned into a positive self-talk session. “Okay Becca, you know you don’t really have the juice right now... the question is what will you do with what you have?” It seemed like when I wanted to ask more of myself, my body just wouldn’t respond. In the end I definitely put what I had out there. I am proud to say I didn’t let off, but in truth I didn’t have the pop I needed for the top-10 that I wanted.br/br/In the end of the week it turned out that my two 4th place u23 finishes were enough to get me to u23 Worlds. So really I can’t complain, I am in Estonia! So far I have seen a whole pile of guys in green suits singing an excellent chorus in the airport, a Hummer totally covered in postage stamps, and some really insightful restroom icons. br/br/br/br/br/br/br/br/br/br/br/br/br/br/We are driving to Otepaa as i write this and try to stay awake. It’s really great to be back on the road after being sick (AGAIN) after nationals. That 2nd sickness means the scenario for these championships is similar to that of nationals: go in guns blazing and throw down whatever you have in the tank. It’s hard to race with a ton of confidence when there is a good chance that my fitness is not as high as I would like it to be, but there is something exciting about giving it all you have and hoping against the odds that something good might happen. This is ski racing after all, its nothing if not slightly unpredictable!br/br/Now that i am on the road, and somewhere foreign, I plan to do more blogs with photos. So, I will keep you posted!

CHAUX-NEUVE, France – Bryan Fletcher (Steamboat Springs, CO) turned in yet another strong performance, moving up from 25th in the jump to finish 21st in a nordic combined World Cup in France. Austrian David Kreiner spoiled the day for fans of French World Cup leader Jason Lamy-Chappuis as he took the win. Lamy-Chappuis was fourth. The race also marked the return of Billy Demong (Vermontville, NY) to action following the birth of his baby boy Liam a week...
