On Saturday, October 14th, the Michigan Tech Nordic Ski team hosted the 1st Annual Oktervofest Nordic Relays. The race took place on the Chassell Nordic Racing Trails in Chassell, Michigan, just outside of Houghton, MI, the site of the 2007 USSA Cross Country National Championships. The conditions for today’s races, though not poor, could certainly be described as peculiar. About 5 cms of fresh snow fell overnight on top of a relatively sugary base. The temperature rose from —1C over night to about +2C during the race. After a string of days of near perfect weather conditions, things took a turn to the tricky side today at Lappe Nordic. It didn’t rain or snow significantly, but the temperature warmed up enough to make the tracks somewhat soft and sugary. As mentioned in the previous article, the trails were in immaculate shape heading into the Canadian Nationals at Lappe Nordic. It seems like trails are often great before major championship events and then, the night before the first race the “you know what” hits the fan.
