Summer is over. Crisp mornings and changing leaves. This week I am enjoying a few days off after the summer base period and before the intensity kicks up next week. A little time to look back. divTwo big pieces of news for the summer. We moved into a n...

Gotta love Russia! Seven months after the fact, the Russian sports federation announced today that Julija Tchepalova and Yevgeny Dementiev tested positive for EPO after the final Tour de Ski races last January. Nice going, guys. They're apparently going to retire, leaving behind a pair of pretty good - but now smelly - careers. Dementiev has an array of solid results, including his phenomenal gold

Really stoked about the good start to the school year.  It seems like everyone made a very smooth transition this first week, and we saw some clear progress in a number of the technique items we discussed during a video session the previous Saturday.  The XC runners got in their upper body maintenance sessions and [...]

I just finished up my first real summer races of the season here in Ostersund, Sweden.  We competed in a 12k cross race on Friday, sprint race on Saturday and a pursuit on Sunday.  Overall I was pretty pleased with my performances here.  I was able to work on some of the new techniques that [...]

As per the norm at most training camps I attend throughout a season, my life has begun to morph into it's simplified one-dimensional world (which I adore, haha). As I cruise into the second week of this on-snow training camp up high on a barren high plateau –30 of my closest Canadian ski racing buddies and I are enjoying another stellar summer of skiing up here at the Snow Farm.

This week the Devo group did a round of speed disc golf around the course at Birch Hill.  The general idea is to throw your frisbee, chase after it when it flies off course into the woods then repeat as fast as you can until you get it in the basket and continue on to [...]

When the smoke from a whole slew of wildfires in Interior Alaska rolled in and stayed last week, we had to alter our training plan for the first time this summer.  We canceled a Devo session, cancelled a comp session, moved some intervals inside to the ergs (rowing machines) at the UAF SRC, and then [...]

I’m packing up my bags today and am taking off for a seven week Europe camp tomorrow.  I will spend the first two weeks of the camp training in Ostersund, Sweden and the next five weeks training in Germany. My last block of training went pretty well in Lake Placid, minus one sizeable mistake at the [...]

The final evening as the final part of our week-long intra-team competition, we had an ‘airband’ competition. It’s interesting to see what these kids come up with when given an opportunity to be creative! We finished the evening up with some cake for Brandy’s birthday.

How Green Can a Ski Team Be?

Professional cross country skiers are not usually preoccupied with environmental concerns like invasive aquatic species, composting, or even remembering to turn off the lights in their houses. Nor do they spend a whole lot of time doing trail work. Instead, for the most part, skiers tend to take for granted the negative environmental impact of their sport, with elite competitors criss-crossing the country for races, fleets of groomers guzzling gas, and the voracious appetites of...

There is no shortage of ‘Up’ around Girdwood, which makes it pretty sweet to base a training camp there.  A few shots from our hike on Thursday (day 3). There are few things as disorienting as walking on a uniform green slope while socked in and then having the clouds open up just below you.  You [...]

object width="480" height="385"Every year Ben Husaby, the head coach of the Trout Lake Camp measueres up the group by seeing how many kids he can get to jump off a bridge in 1 minute. This year the group set a record of 55 kids. Watch out, the Pacific ...
