2006 July

Last week, a small team led by Jürg Capol, FIS Race Director Cross-Country visited the 2006 Tour de France in the town of Morzine (FRA) that served as the finishing area for the 17th Tour Stage. The goal of the trip was to gain valuable insight into the logistics, marketing implementation, television & internet production and accreditation services that are part of the organization of any world-class sports event consisting of multiple stages. The lessons...

I have to admit, this year was my sixth summer training in Vuokatti. I have already witnessed the tunnel, the food, the running and rollerskiing trails many times before as I set foot on Finnish soil two weeks ago. Perhaps what brings me back year after year however is the knowledge that each trip will be a distinctly different experience paired with a clearly predictable training schedule. Every summer, the tunnel is refrigerated to a...

Caroline Tangen (21), the 2005 junior World champion is back on the trails. Caroline Tangen was on of Norway’s best juniors for four years, but chose to take a break from serious training and racing last season. The 21-year old is now back ion full training and her goal is to do well among the senior elite. – It will be tough to be competitive with the best and I need to be patient. I...

Eldar Ronning (Norway) is hoping that he will ski fast enough to race Tour de Ski, Worlds and World Cup. Ronning is a member of the Norwegian sprint team, but is training just as much for regular races as for the sprint. Racing in Tour de Ski, World Cup and Worlds will be very tough with lots of frequent races. Ronning will therefore down-prioritize the Norwegian national championship which takes place after Tour de Ski,...

It is now mid-July in West Yellowstone and, like much of the country, it’s hot, hot, hot! In fact, it’s so hot that I had a conversation the other night about how nice it will be when we can start wearing our down jackets again. You see, we aren’t used to the heat up here and we live for the winter time! And, incredibly, it’s already time to start thinking about kicking off the winter...

German Skistar Axel Teichmann has started the seasonpreparations, in a very special way Teichmann had surgery for a leg injury in June. He now has a special made wheelchair made with rollerskis in order to get going with the dryland training. Teichmann is very happy with the wheelchair that allows him to double pole and says: – This way I can get in some meaningful training despite the injury German headcoach Jochen Behle is hoping...

Springtime- back home in Rhinelander the whole time, or any notable trips? No real notable trips, but I did spend a lot of time talking to schools throughout the state about the Olympic experience and how they can excell in anything they set their heart on. Best of luck with the...

Cross Country Alaska (CCAK) and the US Ski Team hosted a dry-land training camp in Anchorage July 11 – 15, 2006 for elite junior and senior skiers. Mars Hill, ME—July 8 marked the 16th running of the Mars Hill Climb, a grueling uphill race used as a fitness test by Maine Winter Sports Center athletes and local endurance junkies. The course brings athletes from the bottom of the chair lift to the USGS marker on the top of Mars Hill mountain, a 1.3 mile course that gains some 1,019 feet. Hilary McNamee at the top of the chair. This July’s edition of...

Austin Ross is currently participating in a Vermont Academy Camp in Finland. Austin is a student at Colby College, and originally from Steamboat Springs, CO. You can look forward to one other story towards the end of the camp. Leaving the frenzied atmosphere of a patriotism-hungry tourist town in Colorado on the fifth of July for the considerably less festive confines of a small town in central Finland was a drastic change. When coupled with...

The Norwegian women’s team has a new coach, but Kristin Stormer Steira (25) has no plans of dropping the old coach’s interval oriented training principles. Stormer Steira made great progress by following Svein Tore Samdal’s training principles. The women’s team’s new head coach is Egil Kristiansen, but Steira continues to use the interval blocktraining introduced to the national team by Samdal. Enjoys hard training – I enjoy training hard more than long and easy workouts....

Three years ago we set the bar where we wanted to be today,...

Expedition gives new meaning to the term cross country By TERRY SMITH Express Staff Writer Taking cross-country skiers on a summer backpacking trip seemed like a good idea to Rick Kapala, so he organized 16 members of his junior ski team into an expedition and took them on a 110-mile jaunt across the Frank Church Wilderness. Ten days later, with sore feet, increased physical and mental endurance, a new admiration for the Idaho wilderness and...
