The U.S. Biathlon Association has announced its 2012-13 national team, which consists of 12 returning members and a single new nomination. The squad is led by five Americans who achieved top-ten results on the 2012 World Cup circuit, and were rewarded with “A1” nomination: Tim Burke, Lowell Bailey, Russell Currier, Jay Hakkinen, and Susan Dunklee. In total, seven women and six men will make up next year’s national team, a slight decrease from last year’s...

Gear West: Transition to Summer Training

For most, the ski season as come to an end. This usually results in one of two different mindsets: 1) Excitement for dry-land training and spring/summer or 2) Bitterness that the snow is gone and a complete and utter lack of motivation to begin training for next season. On the motivation front, experienceing a very wet/cold spring makes getting out the door less enjoyable. But on the flip side, spring is theperfect time for unstructured...

This is by no means a comprehensive look at how we fared this year, just one perspective based on a single graph. One of the things that I pay closest attention to is depth: how many different skiers do we have performing at a particular level. The reason for this is that for relatively “small” [...] Related posts:

Brandsdal, Van der Graaf Speed to Victory at Bysprinten

No snow-speed records were broken at the sixth edition of Bysprinten, but the annual two-day ski festival on the streets of Mosjøen, Norway provided plenty of excitement for the 3,000 spectators who came out to see their favorite national team members ski as fast as possible. On Saturday, Eirik Brandsdal (NOR) prevailed in the men’s final sprint, and Laurien Van der Graaf (SUI) topped the women’s field. “I am very fond of Bysprinten. I often do...

After a morning of classes, we headed down to Manchester for a bike ride this afternoon. Our goal was to find warmer air (it was chilly) and gentle terrain. We succeeded on both counts and had a fine outing. Tess, Issy, Brooke, Mackenzie and...

Home is a place I don’t go to very often.  I was joking this spring as I sat in the Minneapolis airport during one of my many layovers as I tried to fly from the west to the east… it was the closest I had been to home in 5  months.  That was…. until I [...]

“There is no way it is skiable,” I thought to myself, “So it can’t hurt to go up and just take a quick look.” Ian, Matias, and I were standing at the high point of the pass between Williwaw Lakes and Long Lake, just behind Elliott Peak in the Chugach front range. What had started [...]

A Motivator of American Skiing for a Decade, Vordenberg Moves On from USST

The U.S. Ski Team announced on Wednesday that Pete Vordenberg — a leader on the team for the past 10 years and the man who literally wrote the book on modern American skiing — would be leaving his post as the men’s head coach. He became a new father this winter, and felt that he couldn’t be both a great parent and coach simultaneously. USST head coach Chris Grover said the team plans to find...

Hopefully there won’t be any more posts like this for a long while. Fredrik Karlsson died recently, I guess in a snowmobile accident. I didn’t know much about him, but I guess he was on Sweden’s development team. As you might expect for someone on Sweden’s development team, he hadn’t quite made a huge splash [...] Related posts:

At the highest level of nordic ski racing in the U.S., athletes know making the national team isn’t so much of a black-and-white decision; coaches mostly see red. Based on U.S. Ski Team criteria, any skier that ends the season in the red group by finishing in the top 30 of the World Cup or FIS distance or sprint lists is essentially guaranteed a spot on the A-team. Those who finish outside those standards can...

Rossignol Group is delighted to announce that its best athletes have extended their contracts up to the Sochi Olympic Games in 2014. Heading the list is Carl-Johan Bergman, double medalist at the Ruhpolding World Championships in 2012. Third in sprint and second in pursuit, the Swede has demonstrated his ability throughout the season, even wearing the yellow jersey of the World Cup leader in December. “The decision to continue with Rossignol was simple. To achieve...

Burke’s Summer Scandinavia Trip: USST’s Simi Hamilton Signs on as Coach

Life at Sognefjell centers around skiing twice a day; skating in the morning and classic in the afternoon. There are four great meals a day. We add in a trip down to the Sognefjord, and we complete the “Willie’s” uphill roller ski time trial in honor of our friend Willie Neal. A lot of top US skiers have enjoyed this one. US Team members Simi and Liz Stephen have both gone twice. Each year is...

Vordenberg Resigns as USST Men’s Coach

After ten years as a coach with the U.S. Ski Team, Pete Vordenberg announced on Wednesday that he is resigning from his post as the men’s cross-country coach. “The foremost reason I am leaving my coaching position is my new family,” said Vordenberg in a press release. “To do the job the way I would want to do it would require more travel, time and energy than I can give it. I support the whole...
