Summer Training with Stratton’s T2 Team (Videos)

Since its six-skier strong elite club based in the resort town of Stratton, Vt. Stratton Mountain School (SMS) graduates Andy Newell and Skyler Davis were originally part of the program. This year, the two U.S. Ski Team (USST) members are joined by three Dartmouth graduates — Eric Packer, Sophie Caldwell and Erika Flowers — and USST member Jessie Diggins, formerly of Central Cross Country (CXC). Head coach Gus Kaeding also came from CXC, where he was an...

Atomic Reports from Sognefjell

For many years, top Norwegian and Swedish athletes have ventured north at the end of spring for extensive on snow training at the Sognefjell  glacier in Norway.   This spring, more US skiers have made the trip to Sognefjell than at anytime before.  Sognefjell is becoming more than a backyard training facility for top Scandinavians, it is evolving into the premier place for all nationalities to come to early in the summer.  It only makes sense...

I did another workout in my bounding (classic striding imitation) progression this morning. U.S. Ski Team coach Jason Cork and I went down to Soldier Hollow (Nordic Venue for the 2002 Olympics). After a 25 minute running warm-up, I did 5+ … Continue reading

We wrapped up the annual SMS summer camps last week and had over 100 kids attending them. Erika and I were counselors at both the BKL camp and the junior camp and the rest of the team helped out when they returned from Europe. Working at these camps is...

Continuing with my summer reading of XC news, I again perused an one of FIS’s short interviews, this time with Switzerland’s Laurien Van der Graaff. Unlike Masako Ishida, whom we considered earlier this week, Van der Graaff is a sprint specialist, and a freestyle sprint specialist at that. Van der Graaff really did have a [...] Related posts:

Ski Factory Impressions This summer I was fortunate enough to visit several different ski factories in Europe with Zach. After our first year back in operation as Caldwell Sport, we felt that investing in my understanding of skis from the ground up was important for our business. We’re a small business, and it’s necessary for [...]

Chipping Away at Technique, One Cue at a Time

Noah Hoffman has been all over the world this summer in search of snow, and in less than a week the U.S. Ski Team member will be jetting off again to find more. This time he’s headed to the Southern Hemisphere along with teammate Kris Freeman to train at the Snow Farm, New Zealand’s premier cross-country ski field and, until this year, a regular U.S. training destination. It won’t be the first time this summer...

Truckee Progresses Toward Hosting Spring Series

The Auburn Ski Club in Truckee, Calif., is currently working towards being officially named to host the 2013 SuperTour Finals and Distance Nationals. U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) Nordic Manager Joey Caterinichio said in an email on Tuesday that Truckee is the “tentative site” to host and should be closer to confirmation within the week. The event is scheduled for March 28/29 through April 5. “Due to the timeframe of this event, finding a place...

It has been a busy month for our SMST2 team. Skyler, Erika and Sophie were here continuing with steady training. Jessie went to Sweden while Eric and Andy went to Austria and Germany, all on USST trips. And..last week, when those three returned, ...

Last week was the second week-long BKL camp of the summer, and I’m happy to announce we escaped without any casualties. In fact, one of the rollerski groups completed their session without any bloodshed! — a landmark accomplishment. Add to that the good weather, enthusiastic campers, and fun activities, and you can imagine that we [...]

I was reading FIS’s interview with Japan’s Masako Ishida with interest, because I’ve really been rooting for her to pull off some strong results. In the interview, she mentions that some of her goals for next season include increasing her presence in the top 5, and in particular making the jump up to some podium [...] Related posts:

What’s in a Recovery Day? USST Members Weigh In

It’s almost September, and let’s be honest, you’re in great shape. Or you’re almost there. Just a little longer distances, some slightly harder efforts and bam! You suddenly feel a tickle in your throat. Your head’s pounding, your legs are shot and your heart races when you start working out. You’re having trouble sleeping and this head cold is something you hadn’t bargained for. What gives? Probably overtraining. “Pish-posh,” you think. “I’m not an elite...
