Swedish Skidsport.com reports that the Swedish men’s team completed a very successful ten day long Ramsau, Austria camp on Thursday this week. National team captain Per Erik Ronnestrand says that the team experienced perfect ski conditions throughout the entire camp, with hard tracks and sun every morning on the Ramsau glacier at 2700 meters. In addition to skiing, the skiers did quite a bit of rollerskiing on the closed-to-traffic rollerski course, and on the nearby...

Norwegian newspaper VG reports that WADA director Rune Andersen isn’t nearly as pessimistic as the Norwegian women’s national team coach Svein Tore Samdal regarding possible dopers chances of getting away with cheating. Samdal is afraid that DYN-EPO can cause doping situations similar to what happened during the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City. – I believe that DYN-EPO might have been mistaken for other blood-products available on the market. Our science department is working closely...

The private Norwegian marathon-team has been in existence for a few seasons, but the planning has never been as professional as this year. – We have notices an increased interest around the team and the skiers. Our sponsors feel they get their money’s worth, says team director Lars Aabol. The team sponsor, the Sport equipment provider, Intersport, is so satisfied that it has decided to support the team for two more years. The skiers has...

It’s now mandatory to use a helmet when rollerskiing at training camps as a member of the Norwegian junior national team. Junior national team coach Jon Arne Schjetne decided to make helmet usage mandatory in rollerski workout following Unni Odegaard’s recent accident. – I wanted to focus on increasing helmet usage among Norwegian roller skiers and felt it would be good to start with the junior national team. The skiers agreed with me, says Schjetne....

Terje Monsen (47) from Molde, Norway wants to do well in the 90-kilometer long Swedish Vasaloppet marathon race. His goal is in fact to beat (all) the younger skiers from his area that are also traveling across the border to participate in the World’s largest cross-country ski race. Terje knows that “talk is cheap” come March and is preparing himself for the winter with workouts that can (at least) mentally scare his competitors. Terje skied...

World Cup skier Odd-Bjorn Hjelmeset got sick with a cold already during the first week of the Norwegian national team’s altitude camp in Stelvio, Italy. A sore throat and chest made Odd-Bjorn return to Norway last Friday, after only four days in Italy. -I have been to altitude so many times that I know that I would not have gotten healthy again when we are living as high as we do at this camp, says...

I was greatly impressed a couple weeks ago when I read that Alaskan Tim Kelly found a ski area on a deserted island on one of his workouts. I’m not trying to top that, but I did “find” the original Miami Vice TV series 800-horsepower boat used by Don Johnson on my last rollerski workout in Norway before I returned to the US. Let’s first go down memory lane with the first part of the...

The Norwegian cross country national teams left for altitude training camps in central Europe on Monday this week. The plan is obliviously to become better, but the women, the men’s regular team and the sprint team are all using different theories for how to utilize altitude and become better. The women’s team left for Seiser Alm, Italy and 1800-meters altitude. They will do no on-snow skiing. The plan calls for only dryland training. The men’s...

These days I ski race for the fun of it. I train because I enjoy it. Still, there is a part of me that misses the days when I was a full-time ski racer. One thing I miss most is training camp. I loved being able to get away from my daily routine of work and training for a week or two, solely to focus on skiing and becoming a faster skier. It was mentally...

Norwegian cross country Sports Director, Bjornar Hakensmoen says in a statement that Unni Odegaard’s recent accident where she was hit by a car while rollerskiing should be a wake-up call for those who are too lazy or dumb to not use a helmet. Roy Odegaard, Unni’s father is not in doubt what saved his daughter in the collision last Sunday. – The helmet made the difference, he says. Unni had just started her workout when...

World Cup skier Havard Bjerkeli (Norway) is struggling to train as he desire because of on-going back pains. Havard broke his foot when he was 3-years old. He has grown taller than most people following this, but the problem is that one leg has grown a little longer than the other. This obliqueness has transferred to the back, and its causing problems.

“Casey Jones you better watch your speed.” — Grateful Dead It’s the season for long rollerskiing trips. Duluth, MN rocks for that since we’re at the northern terminus of the Willard Munger Trail. 72 miles of paved trail on an old railroad bed. I like to start from the trailhead parking lot that’s behind the Munger Inn, west side of town. Appropriately, the first thing you do out of the lot is sidestep across some...
