We are pretty lucky for many reasons. At school, we weathered the storm without much damage while the valley towns were devastated. This weekend we plan to take the school out to help with neighboring communities. On the training side, we are lucky to ha...

U.S. Biathletes Shine in European Training Camp; Women’s Team Attends for the First Time

Last year, the U.S. Biathlon Association (USBA) took eight men to Europe for a summer training camp, leaving the women’s team to train by themselves in Lake Placid. Since then, a dedicated women’s coach (Jonne Kahkonen) has been hired, so the women are in some ways more than ever their own team. But this summer three of them were invited to the camp in Germany and are training alongside the men. “For us, it’s definitely...

From Skiing to Ultras: Callahan’s New Obsession

A creature of team sports – first baseball, then soccer – Duncan Callahan remembered his reaction when his older brother started nordic skiing at Glens Falls High School in northeastern New York. “I thought he was the biggest nerd in the world,” he said. A year later, Callahan’s brother, Bill, convinced him to try it. In darkness, the two set out on the city’s illuminated trail system. Afterward, Bill suggested his little brother come out...

As promised from last time, a quick look at some similar data broken down by race length. I’ve filtered out the occasional “strange” race length, to focus on just the standard 5, 10, 15, 30 and 50 kilometer distances. The metric is the same: the median number of skiers within a fixed percent of the [...] Related posts:

Gavin Hess, a Pittsford, NY native, qualified to attend the camp by finishing the week at Junior Nationals...

Press release BURLINGTON, Vt. — On Saturday, Sept. 10, more than 700 bicyclists and handcyclists are expected to roll in the sixth annual Kelly Brush Century Ride in Middlebury, Vt. In just six years, the scenic bicycle ride through the Champlain Valley has evolved from a dozen cyclists to the largest fundraising ride in the state. Last year’s ride drew 675 riders and raised $275,000 for spinal cord injury (SCI) prevention and adaptive sports equipment...

Why is it when a summer time cross-training endeavor such as trail running offers such enormous physical & cardio benefits that more Nordic skiers don’t do it? For some it is a physical dilemma with joint issues.  For others the issue is not actually physical but mental. Unlike other summer cross-over sports which can greatly benefit a Nordic skier, trail running seemingly has no glide, no free lunch, no apparent opportunity to look around and...

It has been a  while since my last update on the site. Things have been very busy the last couple weeks since my return from our camp in France. I have worked many days to make some money, but at the same time had some pretty heavy training to do as well. In that time since France, our team had Large hill Nationals in Park City, Utah. The level was pretty nice for USA skiers. I w [...]

US Ski Team Budget Cuts Stretch Already Thin Resources

Two rounds of cuts have hit the U.S. Ski Team’s already-reduced budget this spring and summer, increasing demands on athletes, coaches, and administrators alike. According to U.S. Ski Team (USST) Head Coach Chris Grover, the program was directed in late June to trim nearly $60,000 from its 2012 operating budget—in addition to a $30,000 reduction that came in the spring, during the annual budgeting process. The impact of the cuts will mostly fall on the...

For the last two years, the U.S. Ski Team (USST) and U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) have been pushing American athletes to compete more in Europe, citing a need for experience in the cutthroat racing environment there. Belying that push, however, were thousands of dollars in prize money awarded to the winners of the sprint and distance disciplines of the SuperTour, the four month-long domestic race series. Those bonuses—$2,000 for each one, for men...
