The US ski orienteering team just returned from a successful week in Moscow, Russia. The world ski orienteering championships, or “ski-WOC”, as it is informally known, took place over one week at the Planernaya Sport Complex, with athletes from 24 different countries. The Norwegian Birkie, Birkebeiner-Rennet was cancelled for the first time in history on Saturday. It was strong wind that put a stop to Norway’s most prestigious classic style mass-start race. Almost 3000 out of the 13,000 entered racers had started (wave start) and already raced for one hour when the organizers decided to cancel. Aino-Kaisa Saarinen from Finland took the victory in the traditional individual start races in classic technique over 30 km at the Holmenkollen (NOR). Kikkan Randall (Anchorage, AK) was 38th in the women's race. For the 28-year-old Saarinen it was the first World Cup victory ever.
