2007 September

Just a few days away from the start of the US Ski Team’s biennial coaches education event, participant numbers have settled at just over seventy. With attendees traveling to Colorado Springs from Sweden, Canada, and all over the US, the 2007 roster includes nearly twenty-five women. This figure is a significantly higher ratio of female participants than what this conference has seen in recent years. Kicking off the opening presentation this year is 1972 Olympic...

The pursuit race at the FIS Roller Skiing World Championships was held in ideal fall conditions in Oroslavje, Croatia. Start order was based on the prologue race, and the competition was held in the free technique over 18km (men) and 14km (ladies) on an uphill course to Sljeme. Double Olympic champion Giorgio Di Centa (ITA) added yet another gold medal to his collection. Di Centa easily held the advantage he established in the prologue, taking...

“Where are all the girls?!?” is the main question on Chandra Crawford’s mind when she meets the numerous ski teams who come through Canmore, Alberta for training camps. Even on her team (the Canadian Senior National Team) the ratio of boys to girls is 2:1. Don’t get her wrong, it’s great having lots of strong guys around wearing spandex, but this is an awesome sport that should see equal participation from the chicks! Fast and...

FAIRBANKS, AK – After winning a silver and two bronze medals at the NCAA Skiing Championships, Marius Korthauer is used to taking up a spot on the podium. Only this time, he is doing it away from the snow. Korthauer dominated the field at the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ cross country trial meet on Saturday, turning in a course record time of 22:47 at the Ester Dome 5K. Korthauer, who finished first in this event...

Video of three of the top four finishers in Saturday's rollerski race. Slow motion footage is included at the end. Apologies to second place finisher Dave Chamberlain. Due to his late start number we were unable to get any footage of him. Read the article on the race: NENSA Roller Ski Race – Women's video

View video of the races here: NENSA Roller Ski Race – Women's video A hot, humid day in Jericho, Vermont saw the first NENSA summer rollerski series come to an end with a challenging 12k freestyle race at the Ethan Allen Firing Range. The course consisted of four 3k loops of excellent skiing terrain — fun downhills, steep climbs, and rolling flats, this course had it all. With 70 participants, the field was by far...

I know that I say this every fall but, believe it or not, the Yellowstone Ski Festival is right around the corner. By my count, it starts in just over 70 days! For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Festival all you really need to know is that for well over twenty years, cross country skiers from across North America and around the world have traveled to West Yellowstone, Montana to begin their...

WANAKA, N.Z. (Sept. 6) – U.S. Ski Team athletes found midwinter snow for cross country training again in New Zealand while some teammates fine-tuned their own training with their grassroots club or personal coach at home. “There's more than one way to get the job done,” World Cup sprint racer Andy Newell (Shaftsbury, VT) said of the individualized training approach. The annual U.S. Ski Team camp at The Snow Farm was blessed with a storm...

A 1200 meter synthetic cross-country ski track will open on October 20th in Yorkshire, Great Brittan. The track is located in Stockeld Park and is the brainchild of owner Peter Grant, a keen skier. The loop is lighted and is part of ‘The Christmas Adventure’ at the Park. As well as skiing, visitors can skate on a large outdoor rink, stroll through an Enchanted Wood, get lost in a vast Snowflake Maze and enjoy refreshments...

Editor's Note: Instituting a small-group wave start system for this race is a creative way to deal with yearly low-snow conditions. For most large ski marathons, the biggest snow issue is the start area and the first kilometers of the trail, where there must be room for thousands of skiers to start simultaneously. Small waves will require significantly less snow, and will also reduce the extreme congestion often found in the middle groups of such...

Editor's Note: The FIS has not responded to questions from FasterSkier.com regarding how limits on the number of teams could affect cross-country skiing. We assume that such limits would be confined to teams that the FIS considers “exotic.” In May 2007, the International Olympic Committee advised the International Federations (IFs) that the Qualification and Participation Criteria for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games would be analyzed by the IOC at the end of August. Due to...

We recently had a chance to interview Sara to ask her about motherhood and her future plans. Sandra Spitz: Sara, your...
