The weather forecast for Heber City, Utah calls for overnight low of 25 and highs in the forties for Saturday’s classic race at US Nationals. It was great klister conditions with hard packed tracks on Friday and the same is expected for Saturday, however the overnight low is higher, meaning that the firm tracks during the day can change to “sugar†when the sun and warm temperatures starts to affect the snow. 10K for women,...
Ivan Babikov and Kris Freeman waged an exciting battle for the first 10K, but then Babikov took control with a dominating final lap to take the win at the finish by 53 seconds. Freeman collected second place, and another US National Championship as the top American. Great conditions for the men. The snow held up well. Some skied on binder and hard wax, some on klister and those who started late was most likely on klister. Nice and warm, but excellent skiing. Chris Cook
Kikkan Randall (APUNSC) earned her second victory in a row in the 10K classic at Soldier Hollow today. Her finishing time was 23 seconds faster than second place Morgan Arritola (Sun Valley). Arritola and fellow junior Liz Stephen (Burke Mtn) skied very strong second laps to clinch podium spots, while Karin Camenisch and Abigail Larson, who were 6 & 8 seconds behind Randall at halfway, faded.
